You have been promoted to be the Director of FPT Software Company which is part of FPT
Corporation (FPT – HoSE) – the global leading technology, outsourcing and IT services
group headquartered in Vietnam with nearly US$2 billion in revenue and more than 13,000
employees. Since your background is purely computer science, FPT has sent you to study a
mini MBA program at FPT School of Business. In your first class on Management, you are
required to work with your classmates to form a group of 4-5 people and carry out a report
on basic management and leadership knowledge, which will set a good foundation for
future courses as well as your work as a director.

Definition of Leadership

In businesses, leaders are determined from their position, duties and activities
to the business. Leaders can appear at all levels in the organizational structure
of the business, such as the leader of the entire business, with the general
manager, the director, and the head of the department having the head,
leading the working group with the team leader
The best example of a business leader is Bill gate. He is not only an intelligent
wealthy but also a good leader.

Role of Leader with Business
- Strategic orientation: an enterprise that wants to develop needs a long-term and
appropriate strategy. Of course that strategy must be a vision of the future in the
target business environment that the company aims for.
- Support staff promptly: A leader also needs to appear at the right time when
struggling employees need support. Sometimes employees get stuck and they feel
depressed because they are not smart enough to find a solution. What is important
for the leader now is to help the employees find the key point to cause confusion
- Inspire, gather strength: Inspire people to gather for a common purpose. The leader
must make sure that the employees are given proper attention. Spiritual
encouragement for employees at the right time will create great motivation for
employees to successfully complete their jobs and overcome difficulties.

 Some people say don’t let those "scholars" become principals
of major universities in Vietnam, but many people criticize those
judges as wrong. those who advocate for "scholars" say:
although they are not good at their skills, but they have talent
in management, that's why "scholars" can also manage
universities.

principal is a leader, not a manager, and the leader needs a
high level of education, a high reputation, a broad
understanding.Besides, people with poor expertise will find it

 Sometimes managers need to be leaders or contrary. Because,
Management and Leadership are also activities that include the
decision-making process and the organization of making decisions,

Planning
 The manager will create a detailed action plan aimed at a
number of organizational goals.
 Planning is a continuous step and can be highly specialized
based on the organization's goals, division goals,
departmental goals and group goals. Managers must realize
which goals need to be planned in their personal area.

 Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Corporation. Tim Cook first
needs to take the time to figure out the necessary steps
that he and his sales team must make to increase sales.
These steps may include things like increasing a specific
area ad, placing some items on sale, contacting
customers in advance to see if they are interested in
buying more products. The steps are then organized into
a logical model to Tim Cook and his staff can track
them.

 The second of the management functions is


organization and staffing. It is the process of bringing
together physical, financial and human resources and
developing productive relationship amongst them for
achievement of organizational goals.

 Leading is considered the most important and


challenging of all management activities. Leading is
to influence or motivate members of the organization
to work with the organization's interest. Creating a
positive attitude towards work and goals among
members of the organization is called leaders.

 Control is to measure, compare, find deviations


and fix organizational activities to be carried
out to achieve goals or objectives. Control
activities often involve measuring achievement
or results of actions taken to achieve goals.

- Strategic planning: Warren Edward Buffett is an American investor, entrepreneur and
philanthropist. He alway creat a clear vision before he do because he think "a vision will see
many things, believe in what you see“

- Create a model: Konosuke Matsushita is a very strict leader. He set his own rules to be insistent
with himself and set an example for all employees. Working late for 10 minutes, Panasonic
founder punished himself by cutting his wages to set an example for employees

- Inspire employees: Steve Jobs is an American businessman and inventor. He is co-founder,


president and former CEO of Apple. In Steve Jobs, we can see that there are many statements that
can inspire listeners. His best inprise statement is "The initiative helps distinguish a leader and a
follower.”

organizations.
 The role of the leader has been raised since the end of the war. To suitable with
Vietnamese organization, we should understand about culture revolutionary tradition
of Viet Nam people.

 A special real life example is Uncle Ho. The brilliant and moral wisdom of a great
man, a cultural celebrity.
 The leader must respect, listen to ideas and solve timely the legitimate recommendations of the
people

5 main approaches of management

- The Classical Approach : It is about applying the original studies and researches done on
management when it first became an official field of study during times of war, developed in
order to improve productivity, efficiency, and output
- The Behavioral Approach : The behavioral approach is about being concerned with the
individual in an organization. This was developed when managers began to face issues in dealing
with varying circumstances as they could not understand employee behavior
- Quantitative Approach : This approach is about using math and statistics and other quantitative
methods to make better managerial decisions
- Systems Approach: When using the systems approach, you are looking at the organization as a
whole system. You count your employees, clients, customers, partners, managers, and every
stakeholder as a part of this system, and without any one part, the system would fail
- Contingency Approach: This approach is based on the concept that there is ‘no one best way’
in management.

 Trait Theories suggest that people inherit certain qualities and characteristics that
make them more suitable for leadership. Trait Theories often determines a specific

as Contingency Approach, Systems Approach, The Behavioral Approach,
Quantitative Approach, The Classical Approach

Through the above discussions, we can summarize the following main issues:
Understanding the concepts, functions, roles of leadership and management as well
as distinguishing who is the leader, who is the manager reason brings benefits and
helps us not to be confused and ambiguous about the two seemingly different
aspects. In addition, we also know about the theory and approach of leadership and
management from the research of experts around the world. Along with practical
examples from well-known leaders will help us somewhat learn more quickly
