Definition
• The conditionals are used to talk about
real or unreal situations, they are
sometimes called if clauses.
• Real Conditional describes real-life
situations.
• Unreal Conditional describes unreal,
imaginary situations.
• Conditional sentences have two parts:
an if clause and a main clause.
• The if clause can come either first or
second.
• When the if clause is first, the two
clauses are separated by a comma.
• If normally means "on the condition
that.”
 Types
There are four basic conditionals
that we use in English.

– Zero Conditional
– First Conditional
– Second Conditional
– Third Conditional
 Type 0
• It is used to talk about things which are
always true.
 Example
• If you mix red and blue, you get purple.

• If He misses the bus, He is late for

school.

• If I am late for school, my teacher gets

angry.
 Type 1
• It is used to talk about things which are
possible in the present or the future.

If Simple Present Tense Present Future

(S + Verb 1 + O) (S+ will/can/must/may+
Verb 1)
If Risa meets Mr. Andi, she will give the math
book back to him.
 Example
• If it rains, the match will be cancelled.

• If you forget my birthday, I will never

speak to you again.

• If she is able to speak English, she will

ask the tourist to take a picture together.
 Type 2
• It is used to talk about things which are
unreal in the present or the future.

If Simple Past Tense Past Future

(S + Verb 2 + O) (S+
would/could/might/should+
Verb 1)
If I had wings, I could fly high up to
the sky.
 Example
• If I went to Mars, I would meet an
alien.

• If I were you, I would not stay quiet.

• If she were a spider girl, she could catch

a criminal with her spider webs.
 Type 3
• It is used to speak about past events which
impossible to make up.

If Past Perfect Past Perfect Future

(S + had + V3 + O) (S+ would/could/might/should
+have + Verb 3)
If I had known, I would not have let you go
at that time.
