FERTILIZATION
ANNA MARIE T. ARCHIVAL
1
FERTILIZATION
- Fertilization is the union
(fusion) of a monoploid sperm
nucleus (n) with a monoploid
egg nucleus (n).
2
FERTILIZATION
-Fertilization must occur in a moist
environment.
There are two types of fertilization. They
are:
External Fertilization and Internal
Fertilization 3
EXTERNAL FERTILIZATION
Reproduction of many aquatic vertebrate
animals such as fish and amphibians is
characterized by external fertilization.
This is fertilization that occurs outside
the body of the female, in the water.
4
EXTERNAL FERTILIZATION
Usually, because of a lack of protection
from consumers and a harsher
environment, large numbers of eggs are
released into the water to ensure species
survival.
5
External Fertilization
Female releases eggs in water
Male releases sperm in water
Sperm find eggs
Many gametes made!
Spawning behavior or Amplexus
External Fertilization
Two types of external fertilization :
Broadcast spawning
 Nest builders
EXTERNAL FERTILIZATION
Example of animals:
Amphibians
-

8
EXTERNAL FERTILIZATION
Amplexus- the mating position of
frogs and toads, in which the male
clasps the female about the back.

9
EXTERNAL FERTILIZATION
Example of animals:
- fish, amphibians and most aquatic invertebrates.

Seasonal spawning of Salmon
EXTERNAL FERTILIZATION
Spawning- the male releases sperms
at the same time as the female
releases eggs.

12
EXTERNAL FERTILIZATION
Advantages
 Little energy required to find a mate
Large numbers of offspring are
produces at one
Many eggs are fertilized
13
EXTERNAL FERTILIZATION
disadvantages
Embryos are unprotected and
often preyed upon
 Restricted to wet environment
