SCIENCE 5 REPRODUCTION

IN ANIMALS 1
2020-2021
OBJECTIVES:
•Differentiate sexual from asexual
reproduction
•Describe internal and external
fertilization
•Explain the modes of reproduction and
the life cycle of common animals
VOCABULARY
•GAMETES - are an organism's
reproductive cells. They are also
referred to as sex cells. Female
gametes are called ova or egg cells, and
male gametes are called sperm.
REPRODUCTION IN ANIMALS
•ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION – Involves
ONE PARENT. The offspring produced is
genetically identical to the parent.
•SEXUAL REPRODUCTION - involves
TWO PARENTS. The offspring is a
genetic mix of both parents.
SEXUAL REPRODUCTION IN ANIMALS
FERTILIZATION IN ANIMALS
EXTERNAL FERTILIZATION INTERNAL FERTILIZATION
Occurs outside the body of a female Occurs inside the body of a female
Large number of gametes are The number of gametes produced is
located in the surrounding medium less. The male gametes are
where fertilization takes place deposited in the body of female
Usually happens in a wet Needs to have protection for
environment developing egg cells
Eggs are exposed to the environment Fertilized and embryo is protected from
predation and harsh environment
Has lower survival rate Has higher survival rate

METHOD OF INTERNAL FERTILIZATION

OVIPAROUS – Egg-laying animals. Eggs are hatched

outside the body of an animal. Like Birds,
Lizards, Chicken, Most Fish, Reptiles, Insects

OVOVIVIPAROUS – Have eggs that are retained in

the female but the embryo obtains its
nourishment from the egg’s yolk. The egg hatch
within the body. Like Rattle Snakes

VIVIPAROUS – Animals that are BORN ALIVE. Most
