The government will develop 17 “Iconic Tourist Sites” in the country as a world class
tourist destinations which in turn would serve as a model for other tourism sites.
The Tourism Ministry is the nodal ministry for the implementation of the initiative.
VISION
The Ministry shall be developing the sites in a holistic manner with a focus on
issues concerning connectivity to the destination, better facilities/experience for the
tourists at the site, skill development, involvement of local community, promotion &
branding and by bringing in private investment.
EXECUTION
The monuments taken up for development under the initiative fall under
the jurisdiction of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and State Archaeology
Departments. The Ministry will carry out interventions at these monuments in
collaboration with the ASI and State Government,
NEED OF the initiative
As per the latest Economic Survey, the tourism sector witnessed a sharp slowdown
in the year 2018. The growth rate of Foreign Tourist Arrival (FTA) declined from 14.2%
in 2017-18 to 2.1% in 2018-19, year on year basis.
The Survey also showed that the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in hotel and
tourism.
The State governments also need to be sensitized about tourism being a major
driver of employment and poverty alleviation in the country.
OBJECTIVE :
•To achieve a design with all modern and new technologies and facilities design for a
future and urban scenario.
Scope
•To create a city's identity in the waterfront and to provide aesthetically pleasing and
highly functional spaces and activities that encourages the city dwellers, visitors to
experience the beauty and serenity of the site
•Create an economically vibrant and safe and providing the best social and physical
infrastructure for its residences, business and visitors. The Iconic Tourist Sites aims at
overall development from the tourist destinations which includes roads and
infrastructure, hotels and lodges, connect
•Develop the site as a major commercial and tourist sector. And establish it as a major
tourism attraction centre and a local identity.
PROPOSED site
•The project has a three-pronged approach. At the first level, it involves analysis of issues related
to connectivity at the destination, improved tourist experience at the site, and creation of a holistic
tourist experience through identification of hard interventions.
•Along with these, the project also involves identification of soft interventions that will enhance
skill development, employment generation through involvement of local community, and overall
improved socio-economic parameters.
•At the third level, the project shall look into promotion and branding strategy and by bringing in
private investment, it will work towards development of a sustainable management framework.
