INTRODUCTION

Li-Fi is a technology for wireless communication

between a number of devices using light to
transmit data.
HISTORY

 Professor Harald Hass is the founder of Li-Fi

technology
Working
It is an optical wireless communications(OWC)
technology, which uses light from light-emitting
diodes (LEDs) as a medium to deliver networked, mobile,
high-speed communication in a similar manner to Wi-Fi.
Visible light communication(VLC)

 It is a data communications variant which uses visible

light between 400 and 800 THz . VLC is a subset
of optical wireless communications technologies.

 Direct line of sight is not necessary for Li-Fi to transmit

a signal; light reflected off the walls can achieve
70 Mbit/s.
STANDARDS
Lifi uses 802.11 protocols, just as wifi, but it uses UV,IF and visible
light for transmission instead of radio frequency

 The standard is able to deliver enough data rates to transmit

audio, video and multimedia services.

 More specifically, the IEEE 802 standards are restricted to

networks carrying variable-size packets.
APPLICATIONS
1.Security- As compared to radio waves, light doesn’t passes
through wall. Therefore minimal chances of leakage
through windows.
2.Smart Lighting – each LED source has different IP
address, hence offering fast and secure data
transfer
3. Smart cities- Street lights, building lights, and transportation
lighting can all communicate wirelessly.

4. Smart vehicles- front light and back light of vehicles are

replaced by LEDs. This offers car-to-car communication
over Li-Fi , allowing development of anti-collision systems.
5. Smart Homes- connecting fridges, washing machine and
every other device to your smartphones , IOT.

6. Smart Hospitals-Hospitals are a specific case of an

environment where both EMI sensitivity and security of
data are issues. Li-Fi can enable the better deployment
of secure networked medical instruments, patient
records, etc.
IS IT SECURE?

 Reduced Leakage
uses light rather than radio waves, hence
easily contained
 Highly Directional and
Localised
communication only takes place where
the light can be seen.
 Unidirectional
the sender and receiver are not necessarily
the same device, or even in exact same spot.
LI-FI VS WI-FI

1.Medium

2.Operational Frequency

3.Speed
4.Security

5.Cost
Advantages
 It is possible to achieve more than 10Gbps

 Mostly Powered by led’s

 Easy and fast transmission

 Enables communication through light waves.

 It uses light waves which have 10,000 times

bandwidth over radiowaves.
LIMITATIONS OF LI-FI
 Special Hardware Needs: It needs specialised
hardware for implementation which isn't currently
available on a large scale

 Uplink Issues: LiFi has demonstrated extremely high

downlink speeds. There has never been any mention
regarding the uplink and any clarity on how it is being
implemented.
1.Interference: LiFi signals are prone to interference
from everyday lightings such as sunlight, common
household lighting etc due to the use of visible light for its
transmission.

2.Limited Range: The range of LiFi is limited by two

major factors: Dispersion of light and inability of light to
penetrate optically opaque objects (like walls of a room).
Commercialization

 PureLiFi is a technology company based

in Edinburgh, co-founded by Harald
Haas and Mostafa Afghani. They introduced
the world's first LiFi dongle at Mobile World
Congress in 2016.
 VLNComm is a US based company that has
developed Li-Fi products. It introduced
LumiNex, the world's first Li-Fi lighting panel
at CES 2018.
 i2cat, located in Barcelona, Spain, is
developing location based services.
 Zero.1, in Dubai, uses urban LED street
lighting for communications infrastructure.
 Qualcomm, GE, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung
, OSRAM and Cree, are among the larger
corporations who are entertaining this
technology.
