History of NP
• Process developed by Erling Johnson in 1928
• Named as Odda Process because invention was developed in the town of Odda,
Norway
• Norsk Hydro developed it on large scale in 1930
• After few years sulfuric acid was used to manufacture complex fertilizers
• high emissions of H2S and SOx
• gypsum as byproduct
2H3 PO4 + Ca NO3 2 + 4NH3 → CaHPO4 + NH4 2 HPO4 + 2NH4 NO3 + 66.67 kcal

Industrial applications
• applied on all types of soil
• mostly on soils of high pH or alkaline in nature
• applied at planting and early stages of growth of crops
• NP mainly constitutes of N and P2O5 hence, provide two plant macronutrients

Production of Nitro-phosphate Fertilizer
Description
• Phosphate rock is digested by nitric acid in the first reactor
• Temperature = 60-70oC
Ca3 PO4 2 + 6HNO3 → 3Ca NO3 2 + 2H3 PO4 + 22.25 kcal
• Acid gases like nitrous oxides and compounds of fluorine are formed
• Gases are removed by scrubbers
• Calcium nitrate stays in the reactor to provide two nutrients, calcium and nitrogen
• Neutralization is done in second reactor by ammonia.
• Sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid are also added to the reactor

Reactor
• Digestion reactor (R-01)
• Dissolution of phosphate rock in 60% nitric acid
• Stainless steel vessel, equipped with agitator
• Temperature = 60-70oC
Ca3 PO4 2 + 6HNO3 → Ca NO3 2 + 2H3 PO4 + 22.25 kcal
• Foaming occurs due to greater CO2 content, reduced by effective agitation
• Urea is used, 0.1-0.3% of rock feed, to suppress the emissions of NOx and HF

Crystallization
• Slurry from (TK-05) is pumped via P-06
• Reached crystallizer (CR-07)
• Refrigeration cycle is provided to maintain crystallizer temperature
• Liquid ammonia enters evaporator (E-08)
• Hot stream from CR-07 also E-08 and exchange heat with liquid ammonia
• Ammonia gets vaporized and passed to neutralizer
• Slurry move towards heat exchanger (E-09) and is further cooled by water
• It is circulated back to crystallizer and to form crystals of calcium nitrate
• Temperature = -5oC to attain 85% P2O5-water solubility

Process Selection
Selected process for the manufacture of nitro-phosphate is ODDA PROCESS
because:
• It’s the oldest, simplest and widely used process all over the world.
• By-products are upgraded to commercial and useful products like AN, CAN and
CN.
• Process is sulfur independent.
• No solid waste and disposal difficulty.
• Product quality is fine due to removal of impurities at every step
• CO2 emissions from ammonia plant are used in the absorption column for the
formation of ammonium carbonate.

Capacity Selection
• Demand of nitro-phosphate fertilizer is increasing day by day
• Increasing demand of food with population growth
• Currently in Pakistan, Production of NP = Consumption of NP
• No import of NP after 2009-10
• After analyzing last 10 years
• Growth rate for consumption of NP is 9.6%
• Current consumption of NP is 688,000 MTPA
• Consumption after 5 years will be 992,040 MTPA
• Difference is 304,040 MTPA
