Electrical Discharge Machining(EDM) is a process of metal machining

which uses thousands of electric discharges that sparks to a metal
workpiece. The process starts when the wire approaches the
workpiece, at some point the distance becomes small enough and the
voltage is great enough. The dielectric liquid breaks down and allows
discharge of electricity like a spark between the wire and the work
piece. This spark that produces heat and it cuts the workpiece. The
electric discharge heats a small portion of the work-piece to
thousands of degrees. Finally, a hard metal workpiece and a very
precise dimension can be achieved
