It was Sunday. The sky was covered with fogs which

prevented the sun to produce enough sunlight. I decided to go
to Uyanguren to buy beauty products for my skin care routine. I
went to my mom to ask for money, but to my surprise, she did
not give me even a centavo. Instead, she turned her back to me
and told me not to go outside. I thought my mom had no
enough money with her so I decided to just spend mine. I wore
a simple polo and a short while my mom continuously
expressed her disappointment for my stubbornness along with
the roaring of the storm. I stormed out the door and started
walking outside. I was in the middle of the street when the rain
started pouring over. I got so wet and regretted I went outside. I
then remembered my mom’s unusual treatment that morning
and said, “I should have listened to my mom.”

USING CONTEXT CLUES
z

Are words, phrases and sentences that surround an


unfamiliar word that can help you recognize the meaning
of the unknown word because the text gives you
information about it. Getting the meaning of the unfamiliar
word through context clues is a very useful process,
because this allows you to read more fluently and
increases your vocabulary.

unfamiliar word.
 e.g. Santa Clause was so portly that his doctor
declared him overweight.

The unfamiliar word is defined by using


the word’s opposite or contrasting meaning.
This type of context clue usually includes
the words: whereas, unlike, as opposed to,
however, in contrast to, but, on the other
hand.

e.g. Unlike Jen, who was easygoing, Jackie was fastidious.

Are specific details in a text that


are used to clarify the meaning
of the word.

e.g.
There are many eccentric creatures in
the forest, such as mome raths and
borogoves.

Only a few weapons are truly nifty in

“because” or “that is” follow a word,
these may be explanations.
Meanwhile, definitions may follow an
unfamiliar word. Terms like “is”,
“means"," is defined as” and “refers
to” are used with definitions.

means he is whistling and sneezing all at once-
can be a funny sight.

instance of the occurrence.

Jabberwock does not merit a case in the
court- charges raised in court for a crime.
