Introduction to GIS
• GIS is a computer based technology.
• It includes storage, mapping and analysis of geographic data.
• GIS is playing an increasingly an important role in Civil engineering.
Supporting all phases of the infrastructure life cycle.
What is GIS ?
• It is a precise analytical tool.
• It is a system intended to Capture, Store, Manipulate, Analyze,
Manage and presents all types of geographical data.
Why we use GIS ?
• It facilitate successful execution of the project by:
• Reducing construction costs
• Minimizing time
• Ensuring enhanced productivity
GIS role in Construction
• It gives the accurate geographic position.
• It provides tools for creating, managing, analyzing and visualizing
data.
• It replaces Surveying like triangulation, traversing , etc.
• Horizontal and vertical controll established.
GIS Softwares
• ArcGIS
• Geomedia
• Mapinfo professional
APPLICATIONS IN CONSTRUCTION
Site selection
• Using GIS we get better site (material availability, traffic issues,
surrounding area).
• Reduce time in selection of site.
• Overall cost reduction in site selection.
Disaster management
• GIS play a role in topographic analysis.
• Locating site of accidents very simple.
• It is speedy to find the require resources.
• Helping in finding optimum routes.
Transportation
• Best tool for designing of transport routibg network.
• Traffic modeling.
• Travel demand for forecasting.
Urban applications
• To determine optimum locations for roads.
• To make maps to provide efficient roots.
GIS in watershed:
• Basically area
• You may call it mountain (store)
• Control the water is necessary because it will deplete all recourses
like vegetation soil etc.
• In order to avoid huge loss GIS is use for proper management.
GIS in irrigation:
• it plays a wider role in irrigation. The most suitable and proper
cropping pattern is identified and used.
GIS in Dam construction
• Before any construction in planning and decision making is necessary.
• Without proper planning result will not fulfill.
• So GIS to identify and select location.
• GIS play important role in DAM CONSTRUCTION.
CONCLUSION
• Basically our desire result can be obtained in many other ways, other
than GIS .
• This will increase cost and time.
• GIS reduce cost and minimize time as well.
