CONTEMORARY ART FORM IN THE PHILIPPINES
• The Philippine Contemporary Art is divided
into seven major art forms.
• 1. Visual Arts
• 2. Literature
• 3. Music
• 4. Theater
• 5. Dance
• 6. Architecture
• 7. Film
VISUAL ARTS
VISUAL ARTS
• During the American period, education
was introduced in the Philippines.
• Juan Arellano, Diosdado Lorenzo and
Victorio Edades studied outside the Phil.
• When they came back they introduced
the modern art.
VISUAL ARTS
• After the introduction of modern art, a lot
of Filipinos artist followed the footsteps of
the triumvirate.
• They were the Thirteen Moderns.

• Abstraction and Cubism also took their
scene and fame
• Showing shapes, color and texture to show harmony

• In sculpture, modern artists used woods,
metals even plastics, brass, etc.
• But most importantly, during this period
reflects freedom of expression and concern
to the masses and conveys nationalistic
messages.

• Even after the American period, modern
art is still evident.
• An example of literary modern art is the
“BAGAY” movement which uses colloquial
languange.
• Oppression and fighting for human rights
are their main theme.

• It was then followed by poems containing
social issues such as poverty, inequality,
political turmoil and others issues that
started during the Marcos regime.
• In the area of short story writing, they
focused on self-consciousness and self-
expression of the writer.

• During the American period, classical
music is evident.
• Then Classical and Traditional music were
combined and Philippine music
continuously evolved.
• Pinoy or Filipino Pop emerged.
• Later on, the OPM became popular.

• Alternative music also emerged.
• This type of music themes Filipino values, political and
environmental concerns.
• Examples are:
• Anak by Freddie Aguilar
• Tayo’y mga Pinoy by Herber Bartolome

• At present, different genres exist in the


music industry.

• When the Americans introduced the
Bodabil, it was not a form of stage play. But
today, Bodabil included short melodrama
that was performed, most of the time, in
Theater.
• Educational system paved the way to the
development of legitimate theater.

• Later on the exposure to different theatrical
styles expanded their horizon and created
stage plays that reflects Philippine realities
and set up.
• Another one is “dula-dula” which is a short
drama-poem.

DANCE
• During the western colonization, ballet was
introduced in the Philippines because of
Bodabil but was also followed by modern
dance which does not conform to the rules
of ballet.
• People on the regions still performs
traditional dance especially in fiestas like:
• Sinulog, Maskara, Ati-atihan etc.

• During the American colonial until
Contemporary Period, Philippines adopted
the Modern Western Architectural while
considering the physical and social-cultural
situation of the Phil.
• The Phil. Architecture was characterized as
simple and functional.

• Later on Filipinos who studied in America
introduced the neoclassic style in building
structures.
• Example: Metropolitan Theater

• “Tsalet” was also developed during this
period.
• It was then, Filipino
used steel for founda-
tion as protection for
calamities.

• After the World War 2, real estate and two-
story houses were developed.
• Lastly, starting from the Marcos regime,
there had been constructions of
expressways, convention centers, hospitals,
hotels, malls, amusement center etc.

• In the film industry, two Swiss entrepreneurs
feature film show in Manila which is the life
Dr. Jose Rizal. AND THIS STARTED THE
FILMMAKING IN THE PHIL.
• The first Filipino film producer is Jose
Nepomoceno “Father of Philippine
Movies”.

• Most of the films portrayed the lives of
Filipino and used Filipino language.
• Because of this Filipino films garnered more
audience since the majority of Filipinos
cannot fully understand English during
those times.

• In the contemporary period, Philippine Film
revolved around a variety of subjects like
martyr wife, superhero, action, melodramas
comedies and romance.
