What is Health?

Health is a state of PHYSICAL, MENTAL and SOCIAL


WELL BEING in which disease or infirmity are absent.
What is Mental Health?

Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual


realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can
work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or
his community.
Objectives of this presentation

• To raise Awareness of Mental Health conditions


• To Remove the stigma attached to having a Mental health issues
• To Encourage others to speak freely about Mental Health
Why we should study about Mental
Health?
 One person dies every 40 seconds from suicide
 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression
 56 million Indians suffer from depression
 India accounts 36.6 percent of suicides globally
 38 million Indians have anxiety disorders
Components of Mental Health
1. Cognitive component
- Thinking is the cognitive component

2. Emotional or sensory component

- Feeling is the emotional or sensory component

3. Behavioural component

- Action is the behavioural component


Why Mental health is important???
 It affects how you learn:
– Your attentiveness

– Your concentration

– Your classroom conduct

– Your ability to organize

– Your ability to communicate

 It affects on relationship with others


What are the warning signs??

o Isolation or social exclusion


o Self harm
o Suicidal thoughts
o Unexplained mood swings
o Issues with sleeping
o Low or zero confidence
o Depressed mood most of the time
Mental Health issues can lead to:

• Major Depressive Disorder


• Social Anxiety Disorder
• Panic attacks
• Neurological disorders
• Obsessive Compulsive disorder(OCD)
What we can do at our level?
– Recognize warning signs in

 How you think


 How you feel
 How you act

– Practice stress management and other self care


strategies throughout life.

– Know when and where to get help


– Eat healthfully

– Exercise adequately

– Care for your health daily

– Take time for yourself regularly

– Sleep well

– Manage stress diligently
