Let us put ourselves in the Holy

Presence of God
“Naming and Chemical Formula Writing”
Objective
At the end of the lesson the learners should
be able to
• name and write formulas of binary ionic
compounds
Oxide vs
•Chemical Name – name of element or compound

•Chemical Formula – shorthand method in writing

the name of the compound
Iodine Chemical Name
Chemical Formulas
I Atom/Element
I -1 Ion
IO-1 Polyatomic Ion
What does the positive/negative
sign of the ion tell us?

•Tells us the charge of the ion

•Number that describes the loss or gain of
electrons in a compound
+1 H Li Na K -1 Fl Cl Br I
+2 Be Mg Ca Sr Ba -2 O S Se Te
+3 Al -3 N P As
+4 Si
+5 W
Crisscross method
1. Write symbol of cation first followed by anion
2. Bring down charges to opposite ion; drop the
positive/negative signs
3. Simplify subscript to lowest term
Examples: -1 -2
1. Lithium and Fluorine Li O
2. Sodium and Iodine
3. Beryllium and Oxygen
Li2O
Ca +2 + O -2

CaO Cs +1 + S -2
IBT TIME: Write the chemical formula of the ff:

1. Sodium fluoride
2. Rubidium sulfide
3. Silver oxide
4. Magnesium sulfide
5. Barium oxide
6. Lithium selenide
IBT TIME: Write the chemical name of the ff:

1. CaS
2. Li3N
3. Zn2O
sodium + chlorine Sodium 1chloride 2
NaCl
magnesium + chlorine Magnesium MgCl
4 2
3
chloride
calcium + oxygen Calcium5 oxide CaO6
aluminum + oxygen Aluminum7 oxide Al28O3
potassium + bromine Potassium9 bromide KBr

1 Corinthians 3:10
• According to the grace of God given to me, like a wise
master builder I laid a foundation, and another is
building upon it. But each one must be careful how he
builds upon it.

• In forming ionic bonds, we have to master each of the elements before

knowing the name of the final compound. How will you find the answer if you
do not know the elements or its components? If you are having difficulties in
naming ionic bonds, what should you do now?
Generalization: Let’s play
(DLL#5)
Instruction: You will write down a question for
the answer which is already given.
Example GIVEN: Mrs. Mary Anne Celos
Your question should be: Who is the JHS principal of PCS?

Given #1: Ions

Given #2: Crisscross method
