Vernacular
Architecture As A
Model
For Contemporary
Design.
The quest for a deeper
approach of contemporary
architecture to nature
sometimes conceals the
achievements of the
past. Vernacular
architecture is, by its
definition, aim
and structure, the most
integrated architectural form
in communion with the
environment.
Vernacular architecture.
Vernacular architecture is architecture characterized
by the use of local materials and knowledge, usually
without the supervision of professional
architects. Vernacular buildings are typically simple
and practical, whether residential houses or built for
other purposes.
Categories of vernacular architecture
1 . Kachcha.
2. pukka.
3. semi-pukka.
Technology tends to standardize architecture, striving to
make it uniform and resulting in a globalization of the
architectural thought. The trend of contemporary
architecture is not characterized by adapting to the urban or
natural context. As such, new buildings are frequently put in
opposition to their urban and natural context, which is
often completely ignored. Solving this issue requires
vernacular architectural solutions.
Modern architects have realized the significance of the simple
ecological principles incorporated in vernacular architecture and
trying to adopt in some modern form .
We find something new and different in todays architectural
phenomenon, its a form of attempt to revoke traditions and
vernacular into modern era.
With introduction to modern technologies and materials people are
trying to adhere to some principles of vernacular architecture.
Materials and technologies
The first factor influencing the development of vernacular
construction practices is related to availability of local
building materials. In many areas, the locally available
resources have governed the use of following construction
material for walls.
Simple plans, load bearing walls , use of natural materials
for construction , overall, vernacular architecture.
Construction material
1. timber construction.
2. earth construction.
3. brick masonry.
4. stone construction.
5. adaptation of bamboo.

Jawahar kala kendra
The design was prepared by the noted
architect Charles Correa in 1986 and the
building was ready in 1992.[2] The plan is
inspired by the original city plan of Jaipur,
consisting of nine squares with central square
left open.[3]
The Jawahar Kala Kendra adapts and applies
concepts from ancient architectural
principles called the Vastu Vidya.

The Centre is an analogue of the original city pIan of Jaipur drawn up by the Maharaja, a scholar,
mathematician and astronomer, Jai Singh the Second, in the mid-17th century. His city plan, guided by
the Shipla Shastras, was based on the ancient Vedic madala of nine squares or houses which represent
the nine planets (including two imaginary ones Ketu and Rahu). Due to the presence of a hill one of the
squares was transposed to the east and two of the squares were amalgamated to house the palace.
Correa's plan for the Kendra invokes directly the original navagraha or nine house rnandala. One of the
squares is pivoted to recall the original city plan and also to create the entrance. The plan of Jaipur city
based on the nine square Yantra in which one square is displaced and two central squares combined. the
squares is defined by 8m high wall, symbolic of the fortification wall along the Jaipur old city
