At the end of the session, 80% of the students

are expected to:

A. Convert measurements commonly used in
Horticulture from Metric system to English
system and vice versa; and
B. Value the significance of conversion
in Horticulture.
 Checking of classroom atmosphere
 Checking of attendance
 Review of the past lesson
 Checking of assignments
#1 MOTIVATION

Which among these two cucurbits is longer?

15 inches long PATOLA

Or

40 cm long AMPALAYA?
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Divide the class into two groups.
2. Each member of the first group must have 1 string
bean to be measured in centimeters. On the other
hand, members of the second group will measure
string beans individually in inches. (String beans and
measuring tools used in this activity were brought by
students as their assignment.)
3. Let each group find the total length of all the string
beans they measured. When measurement has been
obtained, each group will write their records on the
board.
4. Let the students share what they have experienced in
performing the activity.
 Which unit is easier to determine in
measuring the length of the string beans,
inches or centimeters?
 From the activity, if somebody from each
group had measured 30 centimeters and 10
inches respectively, which will come out
longer than the other?
For ease in converting length measurements, one
can use the guides below:

METRIC TO ENGLISH SYSTEM

CONVERSION GUIDE

 1 cm = 0.4 inch
 1m = 3.3 feet
 1m = 1.1 yards
ENGLISH TO METRIC SYSTEM
CONVERSION GUIDE

 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters

 1 foot = 30.5 centimeters
 1 foot = 0.3 meter
 1 yard = 0.9 meter
Suppose you want to convert 3 meters into
feet, refer to the conversion guide. Multiply 3
(meters) by 3.3 (feet) since 1meter is equivalent to
3.3 feet.

3 meters = ___ feet

Solution:
3 (3 meters)
x 3.3 (1 meter=3.3 ft)
9.9

3 meters = 9.9 feet

To convert 10 inches to centimeters. Multiply
10 (inches) by 2.5 (cm) since 1inch is equivalent to
2.5cm.

10 inches = ___ cm

Solution:
10 (10 inches)
x 2.5 (1 inch = 2.5 cm)
5.0
20
25.0

10 inches = 25 cm
 Using the same string bean each one has
measured in the earlier activity, convert the
recorded length from centimeters to inches
and vice versa.

 Convert the total length of the string beans

obtained by the first group from centimeters
to yard. For the second group, inches to
meters.
ASSIGNMENT
Convert the following measurements :

1) 11 cm = _____ inches
2) 5 m = _____ feet
3) 7 meters = _____ yards
4) 14 inches = _____ centimeters
5) 15 feet = _____ cm
6) 6 feet = _____ meters
7) 3 yards = _____ meters
8) 6.6 yards = _____ meters
9) 2.5 feet = _____ centimeters
10) 1 meters = _____ yards
