Talk 2: Practicing and Delivering the Talk


Objectives:
1. To rise up more speakers who can effectively
share in the ministry of giving talks in CFC.

2. To train speakers to gain more confidence in


themselves and in their service.

3. To impart some practical skills that can help the


speakers in giving the talk.
Mechanics:
 Talk 1 and 2 Delivery

 Group Exercise (5mins per talk!!)


 Introduction of Speaker- Team Leader
 Introduction to the Talk- Speaker
 Main Message of the Talk- Speaker
 Closing- Speaker
 Critique- Audience
Talk 1: COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC SPEAKING

Communication is Exchange of Meaning:


-Mean what you say + Say what you Mean
CONFUSION and MISCOMMUNICATION

-Communication= 2 or more hearts and minds into 1


Public Speaking Facts:
1. Good speakers are made NOT born.

2. Elements for Public Speaking:


- Use your own style
- Do NOT read your talk
- Be personal and natural (vs memorized)
- “Talk” to your audience

3. Stage Fright is normal


- Pray
- Use “Aware-Accept-Act”
FEAR
“…the beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord…”
Sirach 1:12

FAITH- Depend on and trust in God despite trials and difficulties

ENTHUSIASM- zeal and passion to do God’s work in and through CFC

ANTICIPATION- instead of anxiety, expect something good will happen


to the lives of your audience (and yourself)- God called you and will use
you.

RESPECT- He called you. Prepare for your talk.


Planning Your Talk
 STUDY the expanded outline of your talk

 Be HUMBLE
- Learn from wisdom and experience of your
elder/leader
- Clarify what is unclear

 Analyze your audience


Preparing the Talk
1. Pray
2. Internalize the expanded outline of the talk.
3. Write down and sequence your examples
- easy to understand
- Credible and Interesting, Current and Relevant
- no controversies, arguments or criticism of others
4. Write your introduction
- positive NOT apologetic
- relevant to your talk
- link with previous talk
Preparing the Talk-2
 Introduction tips:

 Ask a question (yes/no, or show of hands)


 Share facts (unusual and interesting)
 Tell a story (linked to talk and easy to visualize)
 Share the objective of the talk
 Preview the topic
 Make an emphatic statement
 Give a ‘sharing’
 Quote the Bible Passage from the talk

5. Flesh out the talk
- examples, stories, statistics, sharing
- link points
- DO NOT DEPART FROM THE OUTLINE !!!

6. Make notes in your talk outline


- Big enough to read 
- Mark key parts only, exact words you will begin
with
- Mark where you will insert examples, sharing,
etc…

7. Write down your conclusion
- Do NOT ramble. Be Decisive.
- Quote a Bible Passage
- Challenge = create a desire to hear more and
look forward to the next session
The Talk Itself
1. If anything is unclear, consult your Elder!!

2. Tips
- Be conversational in tone
- Normal language (easy to understand)
- Simple, clear statements “Say what you are saying”
- Don’t preach/look down on the participants
- Avoid arguments, controversies, criticism of others
- Bible-based! Quote scriptures, summarize them to
make your point
- Share examples and stories from your experience

Talk 2: PRACTICING AND DELIVERING YOUR TALK
A. Practice for your talk

1. FINISH each practice


2. TIME yourself
3. Talk like you were talking to a good friend
4. ANTICIPATE audience response and questions
and PREPARE for them

B. Practice your Talk
1. Warm-up
- Meditate and Reflect, “Deliver talk in your mind”
- Make Notes as you Practice
- Practice your talk

2. Get feedback
- Practice in front of a mirror
- Record and listen to yourself
- Family or CFC Household as ‘practice’ audience

3. Final Practice
- Practice rough spots
- Practice with revised notes
- Dress Rehearsal
C. DELIVERING YOUR TALK
1. Verbal Delivery
- Show Enthusiasm!
- Empathize (look at topic from their perspective)
- Control yourself
- Control your voice (volume, speed, pitch)

2. Non-Verbal Delivery (60-90% of your content!)


- SMILE
- EYE CONTACT
- GESTURE to add emphasis and stress your point
- WALK AROUND
- Control your MANNERISMS!

3. No Humor that is unChristian, negative or


colored
D. ON THE DAY OF YOUR TALK
Stay CONFIDENT in the Lord
- “Lord, thank you for this day”
- “Make me an instrument of your peace”
Do something special
- Visit Perpetual Adoration chapel
- Treat your family, household
- Sing Songs to the Lord
Get Ready!
- Wear appropriate clothes (comfortable, respect your audience and
yourself!)
Arrive Early!
- test your equipment
- talk to emcee, no embarassing intro’s
- be prayed over
Pray and offer your efforts to the Lord!
E. Just before being called to deliver your talk.
 RELAX while you wait
- slow, deep breathing and shake any tense muscles
 Do NOT make any big last-minute changes
- but be sensitive to the work of the Holy Spirit

 Listen closely to how you are introduced


- add or correct as needed
 ‘Spring’ from your seat when called
 Greet the audience
- Eye contact and smile

 NO awkward, ‘silent’ moments


- Looking for notes, arranging mike, etc…

 Pause and begin


GROUP EXERCISE = 5mins per presenter!
 Mechanics of the exercise:
 Distribute CLP Participant Hand-outs to the trainees
 Each trainee to study the hand-out focusing on
delivering Intro and Closing= 20mins*
The actual practice deliveries:
 Introduction of Speaker (15-30secs)- CLP Team Leader
 Introduction to the Talk- Speaker
 Closing- Speaker (Intro + Closing = 5mins or less!!!)
 Critique- Audience (did the speaker catch you attention? Does the
topic ‘connect’ with the previous topic? Was he/she relaxed and talking
to you as a brother or sister would vs. formal and talking down to you?
Did he/she smile at you? Was it done in 5mins or less? etc….)
