ACADEMIC

HONESTY AND
INTEGRITY
ACADEMIC HONESTY
• ‘a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to five fundamental
values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. From
these values flow principles of behavior that enable academic
communities to translate ideals into action’
• is a kind of ‘code of conduct’ that members of the academic
community are expected to follow and which makes it possible for
the academic community to achieve its aims and goals.

CHEATING
• can take the form of crib notes,
looking over someone's shoulder
during an exam, or any forbidden
sharing of information between
students regarding an exam or
exercise.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
• is the commitment to and demonstration of honest and moral
behavior in an academic setting. This is most relevant at the
university level as it relates to providing credit to other people when
using their ideas.
• it requires acknowledging the contributions of other people. Failure
to provide such acknowledgement is considered plagiarism.

PLAGIARISM
• “the deliberate or reckless
representation of another’s words,
thoughts, or ideas as one’s own
without attribution in connection
with submission of academic
work, whether graded or
otherwise.”

WHY SHOULD YOU PRACTICE
ACADEMIC HONESTY AND INTEGRITY?
 Having academic honesty and integrity means that others can trust
you
 Having academic honesty and integrity is important because it can
offer you peace of mind knowing that you believe in doing the
right thing, and always try to act consistently with those beliefs
(https://www.bauer.uh.edu/current/academic-honesty.php)

 Practicing academic honesty and integrity helps individuals (since

this two terms may also be applied in professional fields and not
just in learning institutions) to be more competent
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE
ACADEMIC HONESTY AND INTEGRITY?
 “Academic integrity is like vaccination. If you’re the only person
who isn’t vaccinated, you’ll probably be fine and everybody else
will be fine. If you’re the only one cheating, it probably won’t make
any difference in the grand scheme of things, although if you get
caught it will be unpleasant for you personally - but hey, it’s a
gamble to try to get a life you couldn’t earn by honest means.”
