NURSING INFORMATICS

GROUP 3
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM
IN HEALTH CARE
Definitions :
• System- A collection of components that work together to achieve a
common objective

• Information System- A system that provides information support to the

decision-making process at each level of an organization.

• Health Information System- A system that integrates data collection,

processing, reporting, and use of the information necessary for
improving health service effectiveness and efficiency through better
management at all levels of health services.

HEALTHCARE INFORMATION SYSTEM

• Healthcare information systems means meticulously maintaining

a patient's healthcare records and ensuring that confidential
information is securely kept.
• They apply the science of informatics to the collection, storage,
use, and transmission of information to meet the legal,
professional, ethical and administrative records-keeping
requirements of health care delivery.
HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

• It is essentially a computer system that can manage all the information to

allow health care providers to do their jobs effectively.
• These systems have been around since they were first introduced in the
1960s.
• They manage the data related to the clinic, finance department, laboratory,
nursing, pharmacy and also the radiology and pathology departments.
ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORD

• Clinicians rely on complete and accurate data in order to make decisions about
patient care
• Without a solid system for health information exchange in place between
facilities, it is impossible to ensure that a clinician has the entire clinical
picture.
• Without complete historical information on a patient, treatment plans are often
askew, which can mean suboptimal, sometimes even lethal outcomes
ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORD

• An electronic record composed of health information regarding an individual

patient that exists as part of a complete system designed to provide access
to, and management of, such information.
• The EHR is developed and managed by the health facility or provider. The
term Electronic Health Record has largely replaced the older “Electronic
Medical Record.”
CLINICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM

• CIS is an information system designed to be used specifically in the critical care

environment.
• It integrates the many computer systems found in a modern hospital, such as
pathology and radiology, with an electronic patient record.
• CIS provides easy bedside access for clinicians.
• Once the patient is discharged from the Intensive Care unit the information is
printed and placed into the patient’s medical record.
NURSING INFORMATION SYSTEM

• Nurses are the largest single group of health professionals who directly influence
the quality of most health services provided and their outcomes
• NIS has been defined as a part of a health care information system that deals
with nursing aspects, particularly the maintenance of the nursing record.
• Nurses who specialize in informatics work with computers to help hospitals and
medical facilities introduce new clinical information systems, educate staff on
clinical computer applications and use programs to track clinical outcomes
CRITICAL CARE INFORMATION SYSTEM

• The Critical Care Information System (CCIS) is the most comprehensive source
of wide information on access to critical care, quality of care and outcomes for
critically ill patients.
• As part of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's Critical Care Strategy, the
CCIS has been developed to provide real time data on every patient admitted to
critical care units in acute care hospitals. It is intended to provide hospitals with
information on bed availability, critical care service utilization and patient
outcomes.
THE MEDICAL INFORMATION BUS

• It represents an application of networking and information technology for

healthcare.
• The purpose of MIB is to define a standard means of connectivity between
critical care bedside medical devices and hospital host computers.
• The devices include patient monitors, infusion pumps, ventilators, pulse
oximeters and other devices used in operating rooms, intensive care units
and emergency rooms.
PHYSIOLOGIC MONITORING SYSTEM

• In the NASA programs of the 1960s, physiologic monitors were

developed to oversee the vital signs of the astronauts.
• By the 1970s, these monitors had found their way into the
hospital setting ,where they replaced manual methods were large
and cumbersome and had limited capabilities
ARRHYTHMIAS MONITORS

• Computerized monitoring and analysis of cardiac rhythm have proved reliable

and effective in detecting potentially lethal heart rhythms(Widman,1992).
• Standards for testing and reporting the performance of arrhythmia analysis
systems have been developed by the American Heart Association. A key
functional element is the system’s ability to detect ventricular fibrillation and
respond with an alarm.
AMBULATORY CARE INFORMATION SYSTEM

• Provides automated processing of data and information such as allergies and

medical alerts, patients accounting system such as charging, billing,
discounts and concessions, diagnostics imaging treatments, and etc.
• With this system, the patient waiting time is optimized through effective queue
management.
• It involves one-time registration required per visit. It also facilitates the
management of doctors schedule.
COMMUNITY HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEM

• Collective term for the methodical application of information science and technology to
community and public health process.
• Focuses on the health information system of the community, it is centered on the majority part
of the public.
• Emphasizes the prevention of the disease, medical intervention and public awareness.
• Fulfills a unique role in the community, promoting and protecting the health of the community
at the same time maintaining sustainability and integrity of health data and information.
HEALTH STATISTICAL SURVEY

• Are used to collect quantitative information about items in a

population to establish certain information from the obtained data.
• Focused on opinions or factual information depending on it’s
purpose and many surveys involves administering questions to
individuals.
RXBOX

• RxBox is a multi-component program (biomedical device, electronic medical

record system and telemedicine training) designed to provide better access to
life-saving health care services in isolated and disadvantaged communities
nationwide.
• It is one among the Department of Science and Technology’s efforts for a
“Smarter Philippines”. It is also an ICT (Information and Communications
Technology) innovation designed to support the Department of Health’s call for
Kalusugang Pangakalahatan or Universal Health Care.
