Fires
 Is one of the component of warfighting function
 Form part of the Maneuver support component of the
Combined Arms Team (CATms).
 Fires support maneuver by destroying a adversary and
providing a wide area protection.
 It provides collective and coordinated use of indirect
fires, air and missile defense, and joint fires through the
targeting process.

Fires
Components of Fires:
a. Field Artillery – provides close fires and counter-fires
capability to support maneuver; deep fires to extend
fires capabilities; and interdiction fire to protect the
force.
b. Air Defense Artillery – provides defensive capabilities to
destroy aerial targets or missile, or reduce or nullify
effectiveness of such attack either through surveillance
actions or active engagements.

Fire Support
 Fire support is the collective and coordinated use of indirect
fire weapons, armed aircraft, and other lethal and non-lethal
means in support of a battle plan.
 assistance to those elements of the ground forces
which close with the enemy such as infantry and armor
units, rendered by delivering artillery and mortar fire,
naval gunfire, and close air support (CAS).
 Fire support may also be provided by tanks, air defense
artillery and army aviation.

Purpose:
 to support scheme of maneuver,
 to mass fire power and to delay,
 disrupt or destroy enemy forces in depth
 destroys, neutralizes and suppresses
enemy weapons, enemy formations and
enemy indirect fire systems.

LEVELS OF DESTRUCTIVE EFFECT:
Destructive fire
 physically damage to the extent of making it useless. 30% of
casualties
 requires a lot ammo.

Neutralization fire
 to hamper, restrict or interrupt en opns & reduces comba
effectiveness.
 Takes target out of battle temporarily. 10% casualties.

Suppression fire
 limits freedom of the enemy to move/shoot.

Fire Support System


Target Acquisition.
 It is the target producing “eyes and ears” of the
system.
 It gathers targeting information and targets by using
all available means.

Attack System.
 The target-attacking “muscle” of the system.
 The attack could be lethal or non-lethal (i.e., smoke,
illumination, and offensive EW).

Technical Support.
 Meteorological and survey support is that
technical part of the fire support system that assures
accurate unobserved, surprised fires, transfer of
data, and accurately massed fires.

1. SCHEDULED TARGET - are planned target on which fire is pre


arranged by a time schedule (such as preparation fire for an attack
plan)

2. ON-CALL-TARGET - are planned targets which are fired by the


supporting arms upon request from forward elements. The
supporting arms will not normally work up firing data to these
targets until they receive a request, but they will keep the target on
file for a faster time.

3. PRIORITY TARGET - are combination of scheduled/on-call targets .


They are targets identified to the supporting arms as being vital to
the mission. (such as final protective fire). The supporting arms will
work up data to these targets and, when not engaged in other
