SYNOPSIS

INTRODUCTION
A marina is an emplacement that serves docking facility or basin with moorings
and supplies for yacht sand small boats. Marina differs from a port, i.e, a marina
does not handle large passengers ships or cargo. Marina may be located along
banks of rivers connecting lake or seas and maybe inland. They are also located
on the coastal basins or lagoons, either as a standalone facility or within a port
complex.
“The expenses spent by the rich on their leisures, is being taken as a good source
of revenue by the government thus leading to a proposal for the MARINE.”

YATCH

MARINA AT TRIVANDRUM:
Marina is proposed at Trivandrum because Marina being a tourism promoter
and revenue generator need a location with dense international tourists.
Speaking about tourism, Kerala is the tourism hub of India where there is a huge
flow in foreign tourists due to the climate and topography.
Also Trivandrum being on the Indian coast, the maritime route for sailors for
Dubai, Europe etc. makes it an ideal location for a marina.
Unique coastal culture and tradition attracting both national and international
Tourists. The foreign tourist arrivals in India during 2010 were 5.58 million, a
growth of 8.1% over previous year, foreign exchange also recorded a growth of
18.07%.The crushing route from the international maritime route is very merge
and hence makes it near to maritime highway.
PROPOSED SITE
India is a country in south Asia. It is the seventh largest country by area, the
second most populous country with over 1.2 billion people Bounded by the
Indian ocean on the south, the Arabian sea on the south west, and the bay of
Bengal on the south east. In the Indian ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri lank a
and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman an Nicobar island share a
maritime boarder with Thailand and Indonesia.
Kerala is India's state Located in west India The Arabian sea forms its western
Coast.

SITE JUSTIFICATION
The site is adjacent to Austrian sea — major
maritime highway. The water available is steady which makes it the perfect
location for marina. The site lies exactly between the Vizhinjam port & the
shipyard making the site ideal location for marina. The neighboring port &
shipyard will support one technical squiring, traffic control & service.

NEED FOR THE PROJECT

Marine tourism is getting more importance in Indian Tourism and becoming
major attraction for domestic as well as International tourists.
Marinas play a major role in the marine tourism which includes ocean & coastal
water transport, Hotel & Restaurants, sea sports & recreational facilities attracts
international tourists along with domestic tourists.
Marina Tourism and Yachting is fast growing in Goa and the only Marina
facility in India is in Kochi, Kerala.
Marina facility is required for berthing and other services for Yachts passing by
Coast.
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
The foreign tourist arrivals in India during 2010 were 5.58 million, a growth
of 8.1% over previous year, foreign exchange also recorded a growth of
18.07%.
Trivandrum cost lies very near to the direct sea route from Europe to Australia
and far East.
The cruising route from the International maritime route is very meagre, and
hence makes it nearer to maritime highway.
Due to recent increasing attacks from Somalian Pirates in Indian Ocean, the
Yachts after its exit from Suez Canal takes a safe route towards north and
reach the Indian Coast, North of Kerala becomes the truck route of
International Yacht sailing.

LITERATURE STUDY
INTRODUCTION
A Marina is a dock or basin with
moorings and supplies for yachts and
small boats. Marina does not handle
large passenger ships or cargo. Marina
may be located along the banks of
rivers connecting lake or seas and may
be inland. They are also located on the
coastal basins or harbor or lagoon,
either as stand alone facility or within a
port complex.

BREAK WATERS
The main function of a breakwater or
a system of breakwaters is protect the
enclosed area from storm waves. The
monolithic structure usually provided
at the tip of the breakwater is called

vessel. Its size depends upon the avail-
able water area, its depth and the method
of turning employed for the vessel.

BERTHS

The location and form of the berths is

decided by the consideration of ease of
navigability, -foundation conditions and DRY DOCKS
isolation requirements.

SITE PLANNING

Site planning in landscape architecture and

architecture refers to the organizational
stage of the landscape design process. It
involves the organization of land use
zoning, access ,circulation, privacy,
security, shelter, land drainage, and other
factors. This is done by arranging the
compositional elements of landform,
planting, water, buildings and paving in site
Plans

ORIENTATION

•This facility should be located reasonably close to the water to expedite

the dispersal of rental equipment and the performance of routine
maintenance .
•However, careful consideration should be given to insure that the buildings
not located in an area subject to flooding or storm damage .
•The maintenance shop should have ready access to the water by overhead
crane, mobile equipment, or paved launching ramp to facilitate transporting
the boots from the water to the shop for repair.
•The lounge should be oriented with a view of the water, but late afternoon
and evening sun glare should be avoided if possible .

DOCKING FACILITY
Floating docks are preferable to stationary docks
where fluctuations in water levels exceed -1 1/2 feet.
- Roofed docking facilities are preferred for rental
motor boats in order to reduce weather damage and
the maintenance time spent in bailing the boats.
•A sandy area is desirable for beaching canoes,
skiffs, and small sailboats. This allows the boats to
be turned over when not in use.

BUILDING PLANNING

BUILDING LEVELS AND CONSTRUCTION

A one-level building is preferred to accommodate the required circulation and
room arrangement in the marina support building.
Where topography requires, however, a modest split in level can be planned
by separating the boat-repair space from the rest of the building .
Heavy flooring and framing will be needed for this space to permit storage of
motors and use of an overhead crane

FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

• The sales/checkout room should be located between the main entry and
the
access point to the docks . From this initial contact point information, tickets,
and rental equipment will be dispersed .
• The sales/checkout room should have direct access to the general storage
area, so that rental equipment can be easily removed and returned.
• The storage room should be related directly to the repair shop for access
to
equipment and spare parts .
• Restrooms should be easily accessible from the dock area .

LAUNCHING AREA

It is desirable to separate this activity from normal vehicular circulation in

order to
avoid congestion. This is usually accomplished by locating the ramp on a
separate turnaround or side road. The ramp should be related directly to the
parking area with turn around.
• A paved ramp capable of launching two boats simultaneously should be
provided as a minimum facility. The ramp slope should be constant and range
between 12 and 16 percent. This should also include a tie-up area to be used
for loading and unloading the boat without interfering with the launching
operations.
• A minimum water depth of 4 ft is required to launch o boat from a trailer. -
An optimum guide for calculating the number of launching ramp on small
bodies of water is indicated below .
1. Water skiing- One boat per five acres of water.
2. Fishing or pleasure boating- One boat per two acres of water.
3. Canoes or rowboats- One boat per acre of water.
Each ramp can handle 40 launchings per day.

CLEARANCES

-In the planning of a marina it is necessary to consider clearances that are by

nature in three different classes and for three positions or operations of boats.
These clearances are as follows:
1 . Clearances in slips beyond the beam and length of the boat
Width of entrance and exit channels at the marina
Width of water area for manoeuvring to and from slips.
