Let’s begin with interesting and
exploratory activities that would
lead to the basic concepts of
measures of variability.
You will learn to interpret, draw
conclusions and make
recommendations.
After these activities, YOU shall
be able to answer the question,
“How can I make use of the
representations and descriptions
of a given set of data in real-life
situations?”.
STORY TIME:

Yapak has known to have a source

of spring water that considered as
a nature’s gift located at the
boundary of Morong and Teresa in
the province of Rizal.
Terrence, a grade 7 student of Pantay National High
School, wanted to cross a pond in the area of Yapak.
The Depth of the water has a MEAN (average) of 4.2 ft.
Since He is 5 ft tall, He considered that he could be
able to cross the pond safely.
Then he is right.
Here comes another pond.
Again, he thought he could be able to cross it again since the
depth of the said pond was as the as the former pond which
he had crossed a while ago.
Can Terrence can cross the pond
safely this time?
What is the
Moral Lesson of the Story?
Measures of Variability:
THE RANGE
ACTIVITY:
“#Who’s the Contender?”
Mrs. Urag, Math Teacher of grade 8 would like
to select a contestant for MTAP, a Math Quiz
Bee Competition for Division Level. There are
two performing students who are vying for the
spot to represent the school. In order to be fair,
they considered the scores of each student in 9
quizzes.
The scores are tabulated below.
QUIZ Guide Questions:
RAIZEL ANDREW
NUMBER  What is the average
1 11 10 score of both students?
2 11 14  How did you get the
3 13 5 average?
4 15 13  What is the other term
5 14 7 for average?
 If you arrange the
6 9 11
scores from highest to
7 14 35 lowest, how did you
8 13 16 come up with the
9 12 9 median?
• What is the Mean of the scores of both students?
• How many scores are ABOVE and BELOW the mean of
these scores?
• Check once more the distribution of scores. Which of
the two has a more consistent performance?
• Which of the two students do you think should be sent
ANALYSIS

to represent the school in the competition? Explain.

• Try to get the difference the Highest and the lowest
score of the two contenders. What will you conclude if
you compare the difference of the scores of the two
students?
• How can you use these data to interpret?
ABSTRACTION
• What do you mean if you got a
small RANGE in your data?
• What about if you got a High
RANGE?
A small range means the data
values are similar.
large range means the data values
dissimilar and not consistent
3. If the range of the set of
scores is 29 and the lowest
score is 18, what is the highest
score?
