ADVANCE CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

AND TECHNIQUES
INTRODUCTION
• Advanced building materials are a subsector of the
construction sector. This subsector represents a new generation
of construction materials which demonstrate exceptional
properties.

• Advanced building materials are helpful to make the buildings

smarter, more sustainable, energy efficient and secure, thereby
addressing environmental and social challenges globally.

• Now-a-days many new innovative materials are being

invented and many new materials are being in search.

• New innovative thinking and new invention is necessary to save

our valuable time and energy and also necessary for human
comfort.
ADVANCED CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
There are several innovative materials used in advance
construction techniques. Such as:

• FLY ASH BRICKS • CARBON FIBRE

• TRANSLUCENT CONCRETE • BENDABLE CONCRETE.

• SENSI TILES • RICHLITE

• LIQUID GRANITE • UNFIRED CLAY BRICKS

• GLUED LAMINATED TIMBER

FLY ASH BRICKS
• Fly Ash Brick is a product of basic cement clinker materials i.e.
FLYASH, STONE DUST/SAND, LIME, GYPSUM and BONDING AGENT.

• Fly Ash Bricks are promoted as an alternative to burnt clay bricks.

• These bricks are environment friendly and they can be

manufactured at construction site itself.
DURABILITY:
1) Higher Compressive strength.
2) Lower water absorption.
3) Better Thermal insulation.
4) No salt-pitting tendencies / No efflorescence.

AESTHETIC APPEAL:
1) Smooth surfaces and uniform sizes.
2) Better Thermal insulation.
3) Thinner masonry joints due to higher uniformity in size & Shape.

ECONOMY:
1) Less nos. of bricks consumption due to regular uniform full sizes.
2) Wastage component lower at site due to high strength
3) Less Mortar consumption due to thinner joints.
4) Saving in plastering due to lesser plaster thickness.
TRANSLUCENT CONCRETE
• Translucent concrete is a concrete based building material
having light transmissive property.

• The two basic material used for making transparent concrete

are:
Fine concrete and Optical Fibres

• Translucent concrete works based on “NANO-OPTICS”.

• These fibres passes as much light when tiny silts are placed on
top of each other. Hence optical fibres in the concrete act like
the silts and carry the light across the light across throughtout the
concrete.
APPLICATION,ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGES
• Suitable for floors , pavements , facades
, interior , dividing wall based on thin
panels , partition wall and used where
the sunlight does not reach properly.

• Energy saving can be done by

utilization of transparent concrete in
buildings.

• Good for the aesthetical view to the

building.

• The concrete is very costly because of

the optical fibres.
SENSI TILES

• The concrete of sensi tiles is

embedded with acrylic fibre optic
channels that transfers light from
one point to another.

• As shadow moves across terrazzo’s

surface , the light channel flickers
with a randomized.

• Sensi tiles is mostly used in kitchens ,

toilets , dark rooms.
LIQUID GRANITE

• Liquid granite is a new building

material that is fire resistant to
temperatures in excess of 1100
degrees Celsius, is made largely from
recycled material and is as versatile
as concrete.

• The material is made up of between

30 and 70 per cent recycled
material, mainly base products from
industry. It uses less than one third of
the cement used in precast
concrete,
UNFIRED CLAY BRICKS

• Unfired clay bricks are made up of

earthy materials and are air dried
instead of fired like conventional brick.

• It is eco-friendly and with additional

construction properties.

• It have the benefit of reducing the

energy used in manufacturing and
increases strength and decreases
shrinkage.
RICHLITE
• Richlite is a paper-based fiber
composite material.

• It is a innovative, sustainable
material made from Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified
paper.

• It is used like wood for a variety of

commercial or residential surfaces
or design accents, from sink basins
and exterior wall cladding to
bathroom partitions, guard rails
and pillar wraps.
• Richlite is Stain, water, scratch and
heat resistant.

• It is a indoor and outdoor material.

• A sustainable alternative to other

exterior wall paneling or wood.

• The 70% of material is made with

recycled paper.

• It has high strength and has

resistance to high temperature
upto 350F.
BENDABLE CONCRETE

• A new type of fiber reinforced

bendable concrete.

• This new concrete is around 500 times

more resistant to cracking than
regular.

• The fiber slides within the concrete

when bending occurs , providing it
with enough give to prevent
breakage.
CARBON FIBRE
• Carbon fibre is made up of carbon
strands that are thinner than human
hair.

• The strands can be woven together

like cloth and then that can be
moulded to any shape.

• Carbon fibre is extremely strong , light

weighted material.

• It is five times strong as steel , two

times as stiff and weight is about two
third less.
GLUED LAMINATED TIMBER
Glued laminated timber, also
called glulam , is a type of
structural engineered wood product
constituted by layers of dimensional
lumber bonded together with
durable, moisture-resistant structural
adhesives.

These structural members are used as

vertical columns, horizontal beams,
and arches.

Connections are usually made with

bolts or steel dowels and steel plates.
ADVANCED CONSTRUCTION
TECHNIQUES
CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES FOR
LOW COST HOUSING

LOW COST HOUSING IS A CONCEPT OF REDUCTION IN THE COST

OF CONSTRUCTION. KEY FEATURES:
• SAVE MONEY WHILE ALSO MAINTAINING BUILDING QUALITY.

• NOT SACRIFICING THE STRENGTH , PERFORMANCE AND LIFE

OF THE STRUCTURE.

• TAKE LESS TIME IN BUILDING IN COMPARISON TO

CONVENTIONAL ONES.

• FINAL RESULT SHOULD BE AFFORDABLE FOR THE MOST.

TECNIQUES FOR REDUCING COST FROM AREA

• REDUCING PLINTH AREA BY USING THINNER WALL CONCEPT.

• USE OF LOCALLY AVAILABLE MATERIAL IN AN INNOVATIVE

FORM LIKE SOIL CEMENT BLOCKS IN PLACE OF BURNT BRICKS.

• USE OF ENERGY EFFICIENT

MATERIALS WHICH CONSUMES
LESS ENERGY LIKE CONCRETE
BLOCK IN PLACE OF BURNT
BRICK.
TECHNIQUES FOR REDUCING COST
FROM FOUNDATION
• THE COST COMES TO ABOUT 10-15% OF
THE TOTAL BUILDING.

• SUGGESTED TO ADOPT ARCH FOUNDATION

IN ORDINARY SOIL FOR AFFECTING
REDUCTION IN CONSTRUCTION COST
UPTO 40%.

• IN CASE BLACK COTTON AND OTHER

SOFT SOILS IT IS RECOMMEND TO
USE UNDER REAM PILE FOUNDATION
WHICH SAVES ABOUT 20-25% IN COSTS
OVER THE CONVENTIONAL METHOD OF
CONSTRUCTION.
TECHNIQUES FOR REDUCING COST
FROM WALL
• MAKING USE OF RAT TRAP BOND WALL &
CONCRETE BLOCK WALL.

• IT IS A CAVITY WALL CONSTRUCTION AND

LEADS TO REDUCTION IN THE QUANTITY OF
BRICKS REQUIRED FOR MASNORY WORK.

• MATERIAL COST OF BRICKS CAN BE

REDUCED BY 25%AND ABOUT 10 TO 15% IN
THE MASNORY COST.

• CAN CREATE AESTHETICALLY PLEASING

WALL SURFACE AND PLASTERING CAN BE
AVOIDED.
TECHNIQUES FOR REDUCING COST
FROM LINTELS
• THE TRADITIONAL RCC LINTELS WHICH
ARE COSTLY CAN BE REPLACED BY
BRICK ARCHES FOR SMALL SPANS AND
SAVE CONSTRUCTION COST UPTO 30 TO
40% OVER THE TRADITIONAL METHOD
OF CONSTRUCTION.

• BY ADOPTING ARCHES OF DIFFERENT

SHAPES A GOOD ARCHITECTURAL
PLEASING APPEARANCE CAN BE GIVEN
TO THE EXTERNAL WALL SURFACES OF
THE BRICK MASONARY.
TECHNIQUES FOR REDUCING COST
FROM ROOF

FILLER SLAB: IT IS ONE OF THE COST

EFFECTIVE ROOFING SYSTEM WHICH IS
BASED ON THE CONCRETE PORTIONS
AND INSTEAD PLACING FILLER MATERIAL
THERE.

IT REDUCES THE COST OF THE SLAB BY

AROUND 25-30%.

CREATES INTRESTING DESIGNS AND

PATTERNS ON THE CEILING.
