IMPROVEMENT OF SUBGRADE SOIL

INTRODUCTION
• Geocell is a 3D honey combed cellular structure tha
t form a confinement system when infilled with com
pacted soil.
• The high strength geosynthetics can be used as basa
l reinforcement for the construction of embankment
over soft compressible foundation soils.
• This project describes about types of geocell and sui
tability in different locations.

3
IMPROVEMENT OF SUBGRADE SOIL

OBJECTIVE

• To determine engineering properties of soil.

• Evaluate the influence of geotextiles and
geocell.
• To compare the CBR values of geotextile
and geocell.
• To study the cost effectiveness.

4
IMPROVEMENT OF SUBGRADE SOIL

SCOPE
• To improve the weak subgrade soil by providing rei
nforcement.
• To access the applicability of coir geocell and jute g
eocell as subgrade materials.

LITERATURE REVIEW
REFERENCE MATERIAL USED CONCLUSION
Huang(2004) Geotextile and coir A study which concentrates
geocells on the effect of input wheel
load and output stress or
stain that is produced in
the pavement. The
advantages of mechanistic
methods are the
improvement in the
reliability of a design, the
ability to predict the types
of distress, and the
feasibility to extrapolate
from limited field. It must
be noted that the Geocell
material can be selected
based on the field
requirements.

LITERATURE REVIEW (Cont….)

REFERENCE MATERIAL USED CONCLUSION
Emersleben and Geocell
Meyer (2008) the surface deflection and
vertical pressure on the
subgrade which can be
reduced by the use of
geocells. The effect of
geocells shows that
performance improved as
the height to diameter
ratio was increased. The
use of geocells not only
reduced the amount of
material required, but it
also improved the speed
of construction

IMPROVEMENT OF SUBGRADE SOIL

GEOCELL
• Geocell improves the bearing capacity by 3to 5 times t
han that of the unreinforced case.
• It depending on the opening size and height of geocell.
• Geocell layer exhibits a beam action up to a settlement
ratio of 5% to 10%.
• After settlement ratio of 20%, geocell layer exhibits a
membrane action.
• Settlement ratio increases with increasing geocell ope
ning size; but decreases with the increase in geocell he
ight.

IMPROVEMENT OF SUBGRADE SOIL

GEOTEXTILE
• A strong synthetic fabric used in civil engineering c
onstruction projects (such as highway or dam buildi
ng)
• That stabilizes loose soil and prevents erosion
• Geotextiles will prevent two soil layers of different
particle sizes from mixing with each other,
• They can even easily be placed under water.

IMPROVEMENT OF SUBGRADE SOIL

FUTURE SCOPE
• CBR value of the reinforced and unreinforced soil is
to be determined.
• The compressive strength of soil with reinforcement
is to be determined.
• The bearing capacity test of soil with reinforcement
is to be conducted.
• The thickness of the pavement is to be determined
while reinforcement with coir geocell.

27
IMPROVEMENT OF SUBGRADE SOIL

CONCLUSION
• Geocell can be used as cost effective solution for va
rious engineering problems.
• Reduces construction time and better aesthetic for fi
nal structure.
• When geosynthetics are placed in different layers, th
e highest subgrade strength is achieved when placed
at 1/3H.
• By using natural geotextiles the environmental prob
lems produced to the use of polymeric materials can
be reduced.
