A PROPOSAL ON STANDARD RUDDER

DEVICE DESIGN
FOR A CONTAINER SHIP
Scope And Objectives:
The objective of this design  project is to design a rudder for
a container ship of 900 TEU container capacity of 20 knots
speed.

The main scope of this project is that –

This project is intended to investigate the rudder design and

design a rudder for a container ship to
 Increase the efficiency
 Better manoeuvrability
 Reduce the cost
 Introduction:
1) Rudders are one of the areas where extra investment spent
on getting the right equipment can pay back the ship
owner many times.

2) One of the basic problems is deciding whether to optimise

the rudder for the service speed or for low-speed
manoeuvring.

3) Designing of single screw rudder for a container ship to

increase the manoeuvrbility of the ship.
 Methodology:
1) Various international codes like IS codes are taken into
account for better performance and stability under any
condition.

2) Better manouevring capacity to be achieved by

checking all the seat trails theoretically.

3) This project will include simple data analysis from

various references.
Design Basis:
The basis of this design is to
follow the design spiral
accordingly and satisfy all the
requirements.

Intended deliverable:
A well designed rudder surface with better
manouevring capabilities.
