What is Invictus?
is a poem which focuses on the human spirit
and its ability to overcome adversity. It is a
rallying cry for those who find themselves in dark
and trying situations, who have to dig deep and
fight for their lives. The poet certainly knew hard
times and needed all his strength to battle
against disease.
"Invictus" was written by William Ernest Henley in
1875, while he underwent medical treatment for
tuberculosis of the bone. Originally the fourth part of a
longer sequence published in Henley's collection In
Hospital, this 16-line section has taken on a life of its
own. The unwavering resilience it summons in the face
of adversity has led to its enduring popularity and use
in a variety of contexts. The poem's uncertain
relationship with religion and its insistence on individual
strength also ties it to issues facing England in the late
19th century
Invictus
William Ernest Henley – (1849-1903)

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
 For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning’s of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
