COMPLETE TEXT
On November 10, 1946, the
Netherlands held a linggarjati
negotiation with the Indonesian
government. One of the contents of
the Linggajati negotiations is "the
Netherlands recognizes the de
facto Republic of Indonesia with
territorial powers that include
Sumatra, Java and Madura".
Furthermore, the Netherlands is
required to have left the de facto
area no later than January 1, 1949.
Then on March 2 and 3, 1949, the Netherlands landed 2000 of its troops on
the land of Bali with the aim of establishing the State of East Indonesia. At that
time the Commander of Nusa Tenggara Resiman, Lieutenant Colonel I Gusti
Ngurah Rai was in Yogyakarta so he did not know about the situation in Bali.
In Bali, the Dutch created an atmosphere of government which was
detrimental to the people because the Linggarjati negotiations prevented Bali
from becoming a part of Indonesia. Moreover, when the Dutch tried to persuade
Lieutenant Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai to be invited to form the State of East
Indonesia. The invitation was rejected firmly by I Gusti Ngurah Rai, and was
even answered with armed resistance on 18 November 1946 along with his
troops Ciung Wanara who later succeeded in gaining victory in the raid on the
NICA camp in Tabanan.
On November 20, 1946 I Gusti Ngurah Rai and Ciung Wanara Forces
were conducting a long march towards Mount Agung. Suddenly on the way,
they were intercepted by Dutch soldiers in the Marga area, Tabanan.
Instantly, the corn fields belonging to the villagers turned into a battle arena
that was decorated with explosive firearms.
Ciung Wanara troops, who were still not ready with their weapons, were
not in a hurry to attack the Dutch soldiers. They are still focused on their
defense and are waiting for the command of I Gusti Ngurah Rai to respond to
the attack. With the booty, Ciung Wanara finally managed to repel the Dutch
soldiers.
However, the battle was not over,
because then a bomb blast stormed
the Ciung Wanara troops which were
dropped by an NICA army plane.
Ciung Wanara's forces went out of
control and immediately the Marga
area was filled with flames, clouds of
smoke, and pools of blood. Weapons
came again from all directions. Until
finally the Puputan War Margarana
killed Lieutenant Colonel I Gusti
Ngurah Rai. Since then, November
20 has always been commemorated
by the Balinese people, especially
the residents of Tabanan and at the
site of the war now the Tugu
Pahlawan "Heroes Park" was built.
