• From 2001 to October-2015: Mixed Xylene (MX)
Region-1: Flow through 16” pipeline section (Direction of flow: Refinery to CT)
Region-2: Flow through 14” pipeline section (Direction of flow: Refinery to CT)

Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA) of
4” × 1.54 Km EPS to Hatiali Scraper Trap Gas Pipeline

6. Methodology

Pipeline modeling and simulation was performed by using the commercial software Aspen Hysys 11.0 with
the follow considerations:

6.1 Assumptions:

The crude oil characterization was carried out as shown in section 6.4.
The water introduced to the system only has CO2 (35ppm value) as a contaminant according to the data
shown by AE in its report table 2.

6.2 Fluid Package:

For Hysys simulation : Peng-Robinson

Fluid Packing transition : T-P Flash
Aspen Hydraulics is using a COM Thermo fluid package and fluid package transition.

6.3 Oil Manager:

Oil crude characterization

Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA) of
4” × 1.54 Km EPS to Hatiali Scraper Trap Gas Pipeline
6.4 Oil characterization:

Crude oil characterization was based on the gravity value of the API provided in PrA Table 1, Item 41
(50 ° API), and the molecular weight value (MW = 137.95) calculated from the Cragoe correlation (1).
With both values Aspen Hysys 11.0 (Oil Manager Mode) can characterize the crude.

Equation 1: Cragoe Correlation.

6.5 Building a simulation model:

The fluid flow model, was constructed with the following information: 1) The characterization of the crude and
the water analysis reported; 2) The sizes, distances and thickness of the pipe; 3) The pressure, flow and
temperature in the start point (200 psi y 45 °C); 4) The scenarios proposed in PrA and 5) The pipe was
partitioned into 33 sections that correspond to the premise that each section was less than or equal to 50 m.

To calculate the pressure drop in pipes, the Tulsa unified model 3-phases correlation, is highly recommended
by the Hysys specialist and was selected.

The figure below show the Aspen Hysys simulation model schematic.

and the information shown in table 1.

6.7 Running the simulation model:

According to the scenarios stipulated by AE in the scope of work, the simulation was run with the operational
condition stablished in the table 1, for each one. The simulation is run on a steady state, and, each segment
of pipeline is assigned an average depth value (buried depth = 1 m) in accordance with the best practice of
oil&gas industry and shown in the figure 8.
