A portal is a web-based platform that collects information
from different sources into a single user interface and
presents users with the most relevant information for
their context. Over time, simple web portals have evolved
into portal platforms that support digital customer
experience initiatives.

The problem portals tried to solve in the early days
of the internet was content discovery. In the face of
the vast amount of information available online, the
easiest way for the average user to discover
information was through a human-curated content hub,
known as portal. Portals could display selected
content in order to provide a custom experience for
users.
News Website
• Online Newspaper and a digital version of a printed paper. The
Internet created more opportunities for newspapers and independent
news sites not linked to a printed version.

• A News Website can still use News Reporter or Journalists to provide


them with the news. Journalists are being taught today to be able to
write and shoot video that can be used for Internet news sites, as
well as, the correct format used for printed versions.
Informational Website
Informational websites are those sites which are
created in order to provide a customized and
branded resource for potential and active
customers, members, investors, and so forth.
Business/Marketing Website
It is a website that is used to officially represent a brand on the
Internet, and which is often used as the landing page for advertising
content. Beyond a mere testimonial presence, a business or marketing
website represents a business opportunity if the option is to provided
to make purchases and ideally should also be optimized as a means of
making contact with customers or any other visitors. Whereas, users
are provided with information about products or services the company
offers.

their observations, experiences on a wide range of

made possible by Wiki Software that runs on the Web
server. Wikis end up being created mainly by a
collaborative effort of the site visitors. A great example
of this is the Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia that anyone
can edit.

• Online social network or social media is an online
platform which people use to build social networks or
relationships with other people.

Educational Website
Educational websites can include websites that have videos
or topic related resources that act as tools to enhance
learning and supplement classroom teaching. These websites
help make the process of learning entertaining and
attractive to the student, especially in today’s age.
Entertainment Website
Entertainment websites blends entertaining interactive functionality
and content including live video streaming, video chat communications,
multi-player gaming music and videos streaming with social networking
service. Social entertainment is distinct from social networking
websites. Typically, social entertainment is defined by individual
sites dedicated to a particular type of entertainment experience
incorporating basic social networking services.
Advocacy Website
An advocacy website contains content that describes a
cause, opinion, or idea. These websites usually present
views of a particular group or association. Sponsors of
advocacy websites include the Democratic National
Committee, the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals, and the Society to Protect Human Rights.
Web Application
Web application is an application program that is stored
on a remote server and delivered over the Internet through
a browser interface. This can be designed for a variety of
uses and can be used by anyone. Commonly used Web
applications can include webmail, online calculators, or
e-commerce shops.

Web applications do not need to be downloaded since they
are accessed through a network. Users can access a Web
application through a web browser such as Google Chrome,
Mozilla Firefox or Safari. For a web app to operate, it
needs a Web server, application server and a database.
