TRAINING WORKSHOP

ON NUMERACY SKILLS

BY
MEHAK PURI
What is numeracy skill?
• Ability to apply maths concepts in all areas of
life.
• Numeracy skills involve understanding
numbers, counting, solving number problems,
measuring, sorting, noticing patterns, adding
and subtracting numbers
Numeracy in early childhood education

• Children start learning numeracy skills from the

time they’re born.
• Learning happens from watching and
experiencing numeracy in action, especially
in everyday play and activities
Examples –
Count fingers, toes and toys
 Recognize numbers and shapes on objects like
clocks and phones or in books
Early childhood mathematics and
development
• Introduce the correct math vocabulary to young children using
materials that are familiar to them
• ✔ The names of shapes: circle, square, oval, rectangle, etc.
• ✔ Words that show spatial relationships: under, on, above,
below, in front of, etc.
• ✔ Directional words: straight, left, right, high, low, near, far, etc.
• ✔ Comparative words: more than, less than, taller, bigger,
fewer, smallest, etc..
• ✔ Time: before, after, then, etc.
• ✔ Other math words: pair, group/set, names of coins, words to
describe measurements, etc.
Numeracy integrate with other curricular
areas
Art and math
• Create simple geometric shape collage
• Introduce shapes and ask student to cut and
glue them in separate piece of paper
Music and math
• Count the beats in the song or use toy drum
from mathematical exercise
• sing numbers rhymes , songs– five little
ducklings, dhobi aya
Nature and math
• create the plant graph and look the flowers or
plant and record the size differences
• Nature walk – mix leaves , sticks , pebbles and
tell kids to sort them
• Math and play activities
• Outdoor games like hopscotch , I spy
• Indoor games – dice games , snake and
ladders
Math and Number Awareness
• Sorting and analysis
• Number identification – recognize all 10
numbers from 0 – 9 knowing each number
name
• Patterning
• Counting
• One to one correspondence
• Counting on – Addition /subtraction
Classifying and sorting

• Develop logical thinking and divergent

thinking
• Help in assessing objects various
characteristics
• Children need to learn how to sort and classify
before they are able to move on to work that
involves numbers
Number identification
• First step is to number identification is
recognizing number what a number look like .
This requires strong visual discrimination
specially numbers like 6,9 , 5, 2, 1 , 7
• After recognizing numbers , children can
develop understanding of amount each
number represent
Counting
• Child always start count by rote memorization
• However he does not aware that 5 is 2 more than 3
One to one correspondence
• Each object being count represent one more
• Before understanding one to one correspondence
child will count by rote memorization
Counting on
• This allow the child to continue counting the objects
added to previously counted group without
recounting the entire group
Patterning recognisation
and creation
A pattern is defined any sequence that repeat at
least twice
• First pattern introduce is AB pattern
• As pattern grows then we introduce to
complex patterns – ABC , AAB
• Through understanding patterns , children
able to predict about what comes next?
Strategies to enhance numeracy skills

• Morning meetings – count how many kids

present / absent
• Math talk in daily conversation – example
there are fewer tables than to chairs in
classroom
• In free play time
Goals of Numeracy skill
Pre Nursery Nursery Kindergarten

till 50 100
Understand number names
till ten
Comprehend the concept
of zero

Use one to one Quantify till 30 •Form an understanding of

correspondence while concept of Addition
quantifying till 9 •Form an understanding of
concept of Subtraction

Understand last number Represent tens and ones Comprehend ordinal and
represents how many in a through bundling cardinal numbers
group

Name basic shapes •Explore shapes Use positional words

Compare objects in the •Identify, match, repeat
environment with known and verbalize patterns
