Identification of critical failures

mode of Wind Turbines using Fault

Tree Analysis(FTA)
Need of FTA

 In today times, size and complexity of Wind Turbines (WTs) will continue to
grow.
 The large wind turbines will require more cost-effective operations based on
optimised levels of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS).
 Also the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) costs constitute 20% to 30% of the
total Cost over the project's lifetime.
 By employing a suitable Fault Tree Analysis(FTA) technique, many faults can
be detected and controlled under operational conditions.

Fault Tree of the Power Train
Conclusion

After analysing the fault trees we came to the

conclusion that;
 The most important events in foundation and tower failure are e001, e003 i.e. the
events “yaw motor failure” and “abnormal vibration H”.
 The critical events in rotor failure are e017, e018, e019, e036 i.e.  “abnormal vibration A
″, “hydraulic motor failure”, “leakages in hydraulic system” and “abnormal vibration C″.
 The events e057, e058, e059 and e062 i.e. “short circuit (generator)”, “open circuit
(generator)”, “short circuit (electronics)” and “corrosion” are prone to be the cause of
an electrical failure.
  The occurrence of event , e065, e084, e092 and e093 i.e. “abnormal vibration D″,
“overheating gearbox”, “abnormal vibration J″ and “cracks in high speed shaft” are the
most probably causes of a power train failure.
