BIRTH CONTROL

CONCEPT
Is used for methods of preventing pregnancy and
is often referred to as a contraceptive method.
There are several contraceptive methods
available, for both men and women. Some
methods are considered permanent, while others
are reversible.
TYPES OF BIRTH CONT

There are two categories:

• Hormonal
• Barrier
Other methods include sterilization (surgery),
withdrawal, natural family planning, and
abstinence.

NOTE: Although most contraceptive methods

prevent pregnancy, all do not prevent the
transmission of sexually transmitted diseases.
ABSTINENCE
 As a form of contraception, abstinence is
voluntary abstinence from sexual activity.

 Abstinence is the only contraceptive method

that is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy
and the transmission of sexually transmitted
diseases.
NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING (NFP)

PFN requires periodic abstinence (approximately

7 to 10 days) during your ovulation window. Some
women choose to use a barrier method or
withdrawal during this period of time.
BARRIER METHODS

 The male condom is a tube of thin material

(latex) that is rolled over the erect penis before
contact with the vagina.
 The female condom covers the cervix, vaginal
canal and the immediate area around the
vagina.
spermicides
 Spermicides are chemicals that are designed to
kill sperm.

 Spermicidal chemicals are available in the form

of foam, jelly, foaming tablets, and vaginal
suppositories.
DIAPHRAGM
The dome is filled with a spermicidal cream or
jelly.

Diaphragm is a soft dome, rubber stretched

over a flexible ring.
THE CERVICAL CAP

The cervical cap is a small cup of latex

rubber or plastic.

The cervical cap is filled with a

spermicidal cream or jelly, inserted into
the vagina and placed on the cervix.
CONTRACEPTIVE SPONGE

• The contraceptive sponge is a soft, saucer-shaped

device made of polyurethane foam.
HORMONAL METHODS
Hormonal methods work in one of three ways:
1) prevention of a woman's ovaries that release an
egg every month.
2) causing the cervical mucus to thicken, which
has made it more difficult for the sperm to reach
and penetrate the ovule.
3) thinning of the wall of the uterus, which reduces
the likelihood that a fertilized egg will implant in the
wall of the uterus.
Depo-Provera

It is an injection given by your doctor that

prevents pregnancy for three months.
LUNELLE

It is an injection given by your doctor

that prevents pregnancy for a month.
NUVARING / VAGINAL RING

It is a flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina

for three weeks, removed for a week, and then
replaced by a new ring.
Patch Ortho Evra
Each week during the first three weeks of a
new patch is placed on the hip, buttocks or
upper arm.

The patch is removed during the fourth

week, allowing a menstrual period.
INTRAUTERINE DEVICE (IUD):
It does not prevent the sperm from entering
the uterus, but changes the cervical mucus,
decreasing the probability of fertilization. It
also changes the lining of the uterus,
preventing proper implantation if fertilization
occurs.
WITHDRAWAL AND
STERILIZATION
WITHDRAWAL

Withdrawal involves removing the erect penis from

the vagina before ejaculation.

STERILIZATION- Woman
Sterilization involves the surgical closure of the
fallopian tubes that carry the ova from the ovaries to
the uterus.

MEN This procedure is known as a vasectomy.
