GENERAL SEWING DATA

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING, WORK STUDY & ERGONOMICS

INTRODUCTION
• General sewing data is a technique for method analysis and the setting of time
standards for the sewing industries.
• Best method to calculate SAM/SMV value.
• Devised by Methods Workshop Limited and is being continually developed by
General Sewing Data Limited using an MTM database.
• It evaluates commonly occurring motion sequences within the needle trades
environment.
• Utilises codes associated with a definite time value.
EVOLUTION
• In the 1940's detailed research was undertaken on what kind of Gets and Puts
are needed to complete certain tasks.
• Methods Engineering Council, developed MTM-1 (Method-Time-
Measurement) data chart.
• It consisted of 5 basic motions.
• Total movement codes present in it was around 350.
• Main problem was the time taken by the practitioner to calculate the total time
required in TMU(Time-Measurement-Unit).
MTM-1 Data card
MTM-2
• In 1965, INERNATIONAL MTM
Directorate released a system known
as MTM-2 which has been largely
based on work carried out by the
Swedish MTM Association
UTILITY
• It can set standard time of the product (each individual job/operations) to measure and
improve performance.
• For line capacity planning and line balancing based on standard time
• In reducing operation cycle time by improving method through motion analysis
• Standardization of methods across the production line.
• SAM & SMV
• To find out the required time to perform different jobs.
• To estimate labor costs.
• It can be used to find the times for short motions, which cannot be measured by
stopwatches.
• It can also be used for repetitive work.
Plant Rely on GSD for:
• Methods engineering
• Methods improvement
• Line balancing
• Operator training
• Learning curve analysis
• Style change evaluation
• Pre-production planning
• Costing of new designs
• Management reporting information
ADVANTAGES
• The primary advantages of applying GSD are the ability to compile
Predictive Costing Analyses
• A further advantage is that this predictive process provides the shop floor
with a comprehensive series of Standards and Targets, enabling the operators
to ―work to target as soon as the product enters the manufacturing process
• Improving the Standard Times which are generated at the costing stage
• Shortening the manufacturing process
• Improving productivity.
• Increasing profitability.
FURTHER BENEFITS
• Customization - Each GSD installation is tailored to the needs and
specifications of the facility.
• Flexibility - There is no limit to the number or complexity of changes.
• Modem support - provides a “help desk", the modem support package, online
help.
• Graphics, MPG and AVI compatible – GSD interfaces with AutoCAD and
any other graphic programme in order to produce layouts, style profiles etc.
• Production-responsive- responds to many production variation
Continued..
• Networking – Each department can access the information at the same time
• Computer - Integrated Manufacturing
• Add-On Modules- optional modules which interact with the GSD data base
address cutting and spreading activities, capacity planning and ticket printing.
• Operator Training - GSD believes that the optimization of the operator is the
key to superior productivity.
• Languages -GSD is available in English, German, French, Spanish,
Portuguese, Russian, Arabic and Hebrew, a feature invaluable to 807 and
offshore contractors.
DISADVANTAGES
• Cost of GSD implementation and training (which should be measured against
the return on investment, discussed later)
• Additional cost, having already invested in Time Study
• Time scale to implement GSD (4 to 6 months)
• It is unlikely that the benefits of GSD will be fully realized unless payment
procedures incorporate some form of ―payment by results‖ scheme i.e.
piecework, or something similar (although it should be noted that the long-
term effects of applying such a scheme would be nothing other than
beneficial).
DEVELOPMENT OF GENERAL SEWING
DATA

Master Sewing Data

• Master Sewing Data is an evolved form of general sewing data.
• It was established as a consulting project to establish a computerised work
measurement system that is:
 Accurate
 Reliable
 Universally named
 Methods description
 Work done sequence
 Easy to learn
 Fast to apply
 Based on MTM-2
Continued...
• MTM-2 was chosen because it fundamentally meets the eight demands of
International MTM Directorate in achieving a very high level of consistency for
standard time development.
• Motion pattern of sewing operators’ exhibit some variation in distance as well
as the motion type.
• MTM-2 as the most desirable database for the establishment of higher standard
data for Garment Sewing operations.
Continued..
• This system can be customised for unique in-house processes and can be
developed for special applications which can be included on the MSD Data card.
• Almost all the Garment Industry’s operational methods are covered by MSD:

a) Washing of Garment l) Sub-assembly – Cuffs, Sleeves, Pockets, etc.

b) Drying of Garment m) Button Holes Making
c) Mini-Pack to Packaging n) Labelling and Hole Punching
d) Final Pack to Carton o) Zip Sewing
e) Carton Box Making p) Counting and Stamping
f) Needle Detection q) Fabric Cutting (Auto and Manual)
g) Inspection and Thread Trimming r) Bundling
h) Ironing s) Setup for Auto-Cutting
i) Sewing of Panels – Small t) Embroidery Operations
j) Sleeve, Collars u) Fabric Relaxation
k) Front to Back Panels – Singlets, Shirts, v) Material Handling, etc.
Coats, etc.
GSD displays its costing application
QUEST

• The English pioneer in pre-determined motion and time study, GSD introduced
QUEST application.
• QUEST is an application to enable any business with or without its own
manufacturing facilities to calculate the true manufacturing cost of their
products in various locations.
• It consists of two key elements – the software environment in which the user
can quickly and easily build a garment with a known “Standard Time” and QED
data libraries, which are based on the pedigree and integrity of the international
standard that is “GSD”.
Key Points of QUEST
• Quick Costing
• Drag & Drop User Interface
• Easy to Learn & Use
• Templates to Guide the User
• One week Training and
Implementation
• It is usually deployed in Product
Development, Costing and
Merchandising teams.
