Research Problem a

nd Objectives

Research is an organized investigation of a

problem in which there is an attempt to gain
a solution to a problem.
An investigator knows that a problem is really r
esearchable when:

 1. There is no known solution to the problem.

 2. The solution can be answered by using statistic
al methods and techniques.
 3. There are probable solutions but they are not t
ested.
 4. The occurrence of phenomena require scientific
investigation to arrive at precise solution.
 5. Serious needs/ problems of the people where it
demands research.
 The research problem should be stated vividly and expl
icitly expressed in interrogative form for " questions
have the virtue of posing a problem directly (Kerlinge
r, 1986)
 A good research problem should be SMART, that is Speci
fic, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bounde
d whether it is historical, descriptive, experimental
or case study.
For instance the study is on the prob
lem met by science and mathematics an
d professors in Region 6(Western Bisa
yas)in the school year 1994-1995.

 The research problem are stated as follow

:
 1.Whatare the problems met by science an
d mathematics instructor and professors i
n the SUCs Region 6 in the school year 19
94-1995 in relation(1) administration and
supervision, (2) instructional materials,
(3) teacher factor and (4) student factor
 2.Isthere a significant difference in th
e mean rank levels of the problems met by
science and mathematics instructors and p
rofessors in the SUCs in Region 6 (Wester
n Visayas) in relation to (a) administrat
ion and supervision, (b) instructional ma
terials, (c) teacher factor (d) student f
actor.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

 It is clear, concise, declarative statement, which pro

vide direction to investigate the variables.
 Research objective are the results by the researcher
at the end of the research process.
 The objectives of research summarize what is to be ach
ieved by the study.
 CHARACTERISTIC OF RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
 Research objective is a concrete statement describing
what the research is trying to achieve. A well worded
objective will be SMART.
 It should be Relevant, Feasible, Logical, Observable, Unequiv
ocal and Measurable.
 Objective is a purpose that can be reasonably achieve within
the expected timeframe and with the available resources.
 The research objectives are the specific accomplishment the r
esearchers hopes to achieve by the study.
 Need of Research Objectives
 The formulation of research objectives will help researcher
to:
 With clearly defined objectives, the researchers can focus on
the study.
 Helps the researcher avoid the collection of d
ata which are not strictly necessary for under
standing and solving problem that he or she ha
s defined.
 The formulation of objectives organize the stu
dy in clearly defined parts or phases.
 Properly formulated, specific objectives will
facilitate the development of research methodo
logy and will help to orient the collection, a
nalysis, interpretation by utilization of data
.
Types of Research Objectives

 Generalobjectives -are broad goals to

be achieved.Usually less in number and
met through accomplishing all the speci
fic objective.
 Specificobjective -are term and narrow
in focus. Objectives are more in number
and they systematically address various
aspects of problem.
Examples of general and specific objectives

 Research statement:Effectiveness of planned teaching on

the knowledge of staff nurses working in psychiatric un
it regarding physical restraints for psychiatric patien
t in selected hospital of Vidharbha region.
 General objective: To assess the knowledge of staff nur
ses working in psychiatric unit regarding physical rest
raint.
 Specific objective: To assess the knowledge regarding p
hysical restraints among nurses working in psychiatric
unit.
