Food Poisoning
Introduction:
Food poisoning is also called Food borne illness,
resulting from eating or drinking food that is
contaminated with toxins, i.e. Pesticides, bacteria and
other viruses.
Symptoms of food poisoning
Start within hours of eating contaminated food.
These are;
Nausea, vomiting, watery or bloody diarrhea, abdominal
cramps and fever.
Sickness lasts from few hours to several days.

KARACHI FOOD POISONING CASE
STUDY

Minor brothers, Ahmad 1.5-years old and Muhammad 5-years old had died
in November 2018 after the family dined out at Zamzama’s Arizona grill
restaurant and afterwards consumed candy from a shop outside an
amusement park on Seaview. multiple samples of food collected from the
restaurant, the victims house as well as the bodies were sent to the Punjab
forensic science agency. a lab report that the court had earlier asked for was
submitted in court by the SFA. the report concluded that the children had
died of food poisoning.

The children had started vomiting after consuming food which caused dehydration,
kidney failure and eventually death.

LABORATORY REPORT

An SFA (Sindh food authority) official told the court that the cause of
death was the ingestion of a large quantity of E.coli according to the
lab report. the report concluded that the children had died of food
poisoning. it explained that there was a high quantity of E.coli
bacteria found in the expired meat recovered from the restaurant.

CASE STUDY: 2

A Pakistani man arranges desserts in his street stand in Karachi on July 1,


2014. at least 23 people have died and dozens of others fell ill in central
Pakistan after eating sweets which police suspect were tainted with
pesticides.
Umar Hayat, a resident of the Karor lal esan area in Punjab province,
bought the baked confectionery on April 17 to distribute among friends
and family after the birth of his grandson.

• RESULT: Rameez Bukhari, a senior police officer from the district,
confirmed the incident. the worker may have inadvertently added pesticide
to the sweet mix.
There was a pesticide shop close by which was being renovated, and the
owner had left his pesticides at the bakery for safe keeping.
