Blue Stain

• What causes the stain ?? Blue stain is a common cause of discoloration

of wood in dark tones.
• The color of the stain can be blue, black, gray to brown, can also appear
as red, yellow or purple
• Is the strength of the wood affected? The blue stain has no effect on the
performance or strength of the wood
• Is there a health and safety problem? It does not represent any risk to
health and is safe to handle.
• The blue stain is like a tattoo on the wood and is due to leaving the tree
in a position for a certain time already cut, which causes a certain
thickness of the wood to be stained
Blue Stain

• Blue stain is NOT mold

• A simple test determines if the wood is stained or

has mold, ... scratch the surface slightly

• Mold or fungus grows on the surface and can be
swept or brushed, while the blue spot penetrates
into the wood and can not be removed.

Blue stain can penetrate through the

wood showing up or in thickness of the
wood
Blue Stain

Call Blue Spot is not typically blue, Black Stain Green/ brown stain
As shown:

Black stain can be confused with

Black mold - the scraping test
will determine if it is blue stain or mold

Gray Stain Variety of Stains

MOLD

• Mold is part of the environment, in the air you can have up to

10,000 mold spores per cubic meter.

• There are more than one hundred thousand types of mold,

commonly found in wood are: Pennicullum, Rhyopus,
Cladosporium, Trichoderma, Ceratocystis, also found in oils, plants,
grains or wood

• Under optimal humidity and temperature conditions, mold spores

inhabit wood and other surfaces up to 1.5 mm deep and will
germinate within the next 24 to 48 hours.

• Mold does not damage the wood in its structure or strength.

MOLD

• Colors: black, brown, green, orange, white, pintk, yellow,

• Higher conditions for mold growth:

• High Temperatures

• High Moisture Relative (> 60%)

• Low light

• Poor ventilation

Mold / Fungus

The fungus / mold is mainly produced in two places of the pallet or wood:

- From the center of the wood (bulk), board or block and this is because the
wood was not made the drying treatment from origin and the moisture content
of the pallet or block, table or wood is above 22% tables and 25% humidity
blocks, so which is possible the growth of the fungus from the center of the
wood.

- The second type is because the pallet, block, table or wood dry (below the%
moisture specification) gets wet (in D's mainly) and with conditions of poor
ventilation, temperature and low light grow the fungus or mold on the surface of
the table or block (2mm surface). As shown in the photos of the previous slide.
Fungus

fungus growth, green part where there is

a high humidity for flowering and in the
white part where more fungus is born.

It is appreciated where the knot or vein of

the tree is found there is no presence of
fungus since there is not enough moisture
and conditions for the fungus
