CASE STUDY

OUTLINE
 Introduction
 Fire emissions – Biomass burning
 Model configuration (WRF-Chem)
 FINN Fire
 Expected outcome
INTRODUCTION
 Burning of forests, savanna/grasslands and Crop
residues.
 Scientists estimate that humans(anthropogenic)
are responsible for about 90% of biomass
burning with only a small percentage of natural
fires(biogenic) contributing to the total amount
of biomass burned.
 This releases large amount of trace gases such
as nitrogen oxides (NOx), CO, methane (CH4),
non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHCs), carbon
dioxide (CO2) and particulate matter.
 These gases are a precursor to another
harmful gas, ozone (O3), which was found to
be adversely affecting the country's crops
and contributing to global warming.
 The gases produced are environmentally
significant. The greenhouse gases Carbon
dioxide and Methane influence global
climate.
 Combustion particulates affect the global
radiation budget and climate.
FIRE EMISSIONS-BIOMASS BURNING
 Burning releases large amounts of
particulates (solid carbon combustion
particles) and gases, including
greenhouse gases that help warm the
Earth.
 These emissions impact climate and
can also affect human health when they
are inhaled, causing respiratory
problems.
WRF-CHEM. MODEL AND SIMULATIONS

 WRF-CHEM is the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)model

coupled with chemistry
 The model simulates the emission transport, mixing and chemical
transformation of trace gases and aerosols simultaneously with the
meteorology.
 The model is used to simulate regional-scale air quality over Indian
domain by including satellite derived Fire emissions.

FINN FIRE
Fire INventory from NCAR (FINN)
 FINN provides daily, 1 km resolution, global estimates of the
trace gas and particle emissions from open burning of
biomass, which includes wildfire, agricultural fires, and
prescribed burning

EXPECTED OUTCOME
 This fire emissions may have
impacted the ambient air
quality over India.

with or without FIRE
emissions.
