DEFINIT
ION
• The two nasal cavities are the uppermost parts of respiratory system and
contains olfactory receptors. Consists of bony and cartilage part

Main functions:
respiration
Air conditioning of respired air
protection
Olfaction
BOUNDARIES
CONCHA AND AIR CHANNELS
REGIO
NS

• NASAL VESTINULES
• Skin and air follicles

• RESPIRATORY REGION
• Neurovascular supply/ lined by respiratory
epithelium composed of ciliated and mucous cells

• OLFACTORY REGION
• Olfactory receptors and olfactory epithelium
SKELETAL
unpaired
FRAMEWORK
paired

Palatine bone
ETHMOID BONE
• It contributes to the roof, medial and lateral walls of both nasal
cavities and contains ethmoidal cells
ETHMOID
BONE
PARANASAL
SINUSES
• All 4 paranasal
sinuses are lined by
respiratory mucosa

• Open into the nasal

cavities

• Innervated by the
branches of the
trigeminal nerve
FRONTAL SINUSES
• The most superior
sinuses. Triangular
in shape.
• Opens into the
nasal cavity by the
nasolacrimal duct.
• Innervated by the
supra-orbital nerve
(from ophthalmic
nerve) and
• supplied by the
anterior ethmoidal
arteries.
ETHMOID
SINUSES
• Ethmoidal cells on each side fill
the ethmoidal labyrinth. Divided
into
• Anterior cells-open into the
ethmoidal infundibulum,
• middle cells-open into the
ethmoidal bulla
• posterior cells – open into the
lateral wall of the sup. Nasal
meatus.
• Innervated by the anterior and
posterior ethmoidal nerves of
nasociliary nerve of the
ophthalmic nerve and maxillary
nerve
• Receive Blood supply from the
anterior and posterior ethmoidal
arteries

SINUSES
MAXILLARY
SINUSES
• One of each side are
the largest paranasal
sinuses. pyramidal in
shape. Opens into the
middle nasal meatus.
• Roof formed by the
floor of orbit, floor
related to the 1st molar
and 2nd premolar teeth
• Innervated by infra-
orbital and alveolar
branches of the
maxillary nerve
• Receive their blood
supply from the infra-
orbital and superior
branches of maxillary
arteries.

GATEWA
• Cribriform plate - for
olfactory bulb and nerves
YS
• Sphenopalatine foramen –
for sphenopalatine nerve
and artery, superior nasal
branches

• Incisive canal – for

nasopalatine nerve and
greater palatine artery

• Small foramina in lateral

wall – for internal nasal
branches of the infra-orbital
nerve. Inferior nasal
branches from the greater
palatine nerve
BLOOD
SUPPLY
MAXILLARY ARTERY
• Sphenopalatine artery
1. Posterior nasal branches for the lateral wall
2. Posterior septal branch for the medial wall
• Greater palatine artery
Supplies ant.reg of medial wall, floor of nasal cavities
FACIAL ARTERY
1. Superior labial artery-upper lip, nose , lateral aspect of nares.
2. Lateral nasal artery- external nose, Nasal vestibule.
OPHTALMIC ARTERY
1. Anterior ethmoidal artery
2. Posterior ethmoidal artery

LYMPHATIC
DRENAGE
• Main part drains
into the
retropharyngeal
and upper deep
cervical nodes

• The lower
anterior portion
drains to the
submandibular,
parotid and
Jugulodigastric
nodes.
