What Are Kindles?
● A kindle is a small, hand-held electronic device that you can read books on.
● Kindles were developed by the retailer Amazon.
● Just like you would download music to an iPod or MP3 player, on a Kindle, you
can download books wirelessly and read them on the device, sometimes
without internet connection depending on the device model.
How Kindles Are Used in Education
● The Kindles Are Coming: eReaders and Tablets Are Springing Up in Schools talks
about how school librarians in 2011 were beginning to introduce kindles to
students as a form of reading material.
● For example, it speaks of how Buffy Hamilton would download certain books
per students’ request to the five kindles in her school library so that students
could read the ebook version as opposed to the physical copy.
● Students would line up to write their name down on a waiting list to check out
these kindles, preferring them over the physical text.
● Being able to provide kindles to students also helped students by eliminating
carrying around a heavy backpack full of textbooks. Instead, all the reading
material a student might need was nicely packed into one simple device.
