INTRODUCTION
A viscosimeter (also called a viscometer) is an instrument
used to measure
Brookfield viscometer it is governed by the principle of
rotational viscosimetry, since they measure the viscosity
by capturing the torque necessary to rotate a needle
immersed in the study fluid at a constant speed.
Fundamento
Its operation is based on the
rotation of a needle or cylinder
within the test material

The instrument dial is graduated

such that the reading, multiplied
by a factor, directly gives the
viscosity in centipoise.
Different types of Brookfield viscometers are commercially available,
equipped with different needles and operating at various speeds. LV
models come with 4 needles and 4-8 speeds and RV models come with 7
needles
DESCRIPTION OF THE METHOD TO
CALIBRATE
1. Definition of units.
2. Viscosity Torque Range Selection
3. Selection of viscometer model.
4. Needle selection.
5. Selection of speed.
6. Set rotation time.
7. Define temperature.
8. Establish tolerance for acceptance of results.
Selecting spindle
The process for selecting a spindle and
speed for a fluid is trial and error.
Proper selection will result in a
measurement made between 10 and
100% of the instrument's torque scale.
1.- The viscosity range is inversely
proportional to the size of the needle.
2.- The viscosity range is inversely
proportional to the rotation speed.
Function
Level the apparatus, using
the bubble. The pointer must
be at 0.
2.Select the appropriate needle according to
the viscosity of the test material and screw it
into the pivot. It should be examined to rule
out possible shock or corrosion defects that
could cause false readings.
3.Set the speed selector button
to the desired rpm. If multiple
tests are to be done, start with
the lowest speed

.
4.Flip the switch to start turning the needle.
Let it rotate several times and the pointer
stabilize before reading.

5.Stop the engine while

simultaneously operating the
clutch to make the reading.
Read the reading indicated by
the pointer and write down.
Maintain sample homogeneity
recommendations
Brookfield viscometers have an accuracy of ± 1% of full
scale range for each needle / speed combination, and a
repeatability of ± 0.2%. The accuracy of a particular
reading depends on the percentage of torque read.

The sample must not contain air

bubbles and must be at a
constant and uniform
temperature
If when placing a needle, the reading is 0, the
viscosity is less than the minimum obtained with
the needle. If the reading is 100, change to the
next needle.
Conclusions

● Needle number 5 is used for very viscous fluids

● Of all the properties of fluids, the viscosity requires the
utmost consideration in the fluid flow study.
● Brookfield viscometers are easy to use instruments and
highly recommended if properly maintained.
● The operating principle of the viscometer is to drive a
needle through a spring calibrated
