CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of The Study


 Learning English has been a very
important subject
 The students are motivated intrinsically
and extrinsically (Harmer,2007)
 Some of students seemed to be less
motivated intrinsically
Research Question
1. What kinds of rewards and punishments does

the teacher use in motivating the students?


2. What are student’s responses toward the
implementation of rewards and punishments
strategies?
Objective of The Study
3. To find out the kinds of reward and punishment

does teacher use in motivating the students.

Significance of The Study

1. For the researcher. It gives the researcher a great


experience to learn and research an issue especially for
reward and punishment.
2. For the other researcher. This study hopefully helps
other researchers to study issues of reward and
punishment
3. For the teacher. This study will help the teachers in
arranging the strategy toward students’ motivation in
learning activities
4. For students. It can be opportunity for students, and
give the feedback to the teacher in teaching strategy
and teacher’s implementing on reward and punishment.

Definition of Key Terms
1. Motivation refers to combination of effort plus desire to achieve the
goal of learning the language plus favorable attitudes toward learning
the language. (Gardner, 1996)
2. Extrinsic Motivation is the result of any number outside factors, for
example the hope of financial reward or the possibility of future travel
(Harmer, 2007)
3. Intrinsic Motivation that comes from within individual, might be
motivated by enjoyment of the learning process or desire to make
themselves feel better. (Harmer, 2007)
4. Reward in this research is some kinds of incentives that are given to
the students for certain positive behavior as the teacher’s appreciation
(Deci, Koestner, & Ryan, 2000)
5. Punishment in this research is consequences that are received for the
reduction of students’ negative behavior to be disciplined (Maag, 2001)
6. Learning is Acquiring or getting of knowledge of a subject or a skill by
study, experience, or instruction (Brown, 2007)

LITERATURE REVIEW

Theoretical Framework

1. Reward are defined as any contingently delivered consequence


like event, activity and object associated with an increase in the
future likelihood of a behavior in similar situations ( Horner and
Spaulding, 2009)
2. Punishment is anything that can reduce the frequency of
undesired action or behavior. ( Holth,2005)
3. Form of reward and punishment
Rewards can be in form of verbal praise, good grade, or feeling of
satisfaction. (Horner, 2009)
Forms of punishment that are still used by schools are in-school
or out-of-school suspension, expulsion, fines, detention,
restitution, and even corporal punishment. (Maag,2001)

RESEARCH METHOD

1. Research design
Descriptive qualitative research method
2. Research Subject and Setting
First grade of Junior High school 4 Gresik.

Teacher’s and Students’ interview,
observation and questionnaire.

4. Data Collection Technique and Instrument

 Teacher’s Interview was conducted after and before


the observation.
 Students’ Interview was conducted after they filled in
the questionnaires.
 Observation conducted four times observation in
order to gain more information and to make sure
about the teacher explanation in the interview stages.
 Questionnaire was consisted of 15 open-ended
questions with Bahasa Indonesia.
