DELIVERY
• Family planning services include
counselling of clients to make
informed choices, checking vital
measurements, conducting physical,
abdominal and pelvic examination as
well as provision of methods.
VITAL MEASUREMENTS

• Temperature, pulse, and blood


pressure is measured. The weight of
the client is also assessed. These
form the baseline before the service
so that, any resultant conditions can
be detected and handled early.
PHYSICAL AND PELVIC
EXAMINATION
Privacy is very important requirement that must be ensured
during the physical examination.
• Head: Scalp is inspected for cleanliness lice infestation, scars
and dryness.
• Eyes: Eyes are examined for paleness of the conjunctiva,
jaundice and discharge.
• Nose: It is examined for discharge, infection, cleanliness.
• Mouth: This is inspected for cleanliness sore, dental caries
swollen glands, coated tongue.

• Ear: It is inspected for discharges.


• Neck: for swollen lymph
• Axillae and breast for lumps, and the
woman taught to examine the breast
after menses.
• Abdomen for scars and hernia

• Upper extremities for pale nail bed
signifying anaemia grown nails.
• Lower extremities for oedema, over-
grown nails and various veins
• The back and buttocks for rashes and pain
at the lower back.
PROCEDURE FOR BREAST
EXAMINATION
• Breast examination forms part of physical
examination which is conducted on the client
before a contraceptive method is offered.
• This helps identify breast conductions that may
be contra-indications for certain contraceptive
methods
• The client is also taught to self examine herself
after her menses to detect any lump or any other
abnormality for immediate attention.

creed/beliefs, marital status, ethnic group, or age.

• CHOICE – to decide freely whether or not to have


children, whether to practice family planning, and to
pick the method. To decide for or against any
treatment. Also, to change their mind and make new
choices when they want.

How To Be Reasonably Sure A Client Is
Not Pregnant

You can be reasonably sure a client is not pregnant if she has no signs or symptoms
of pregnancy (e.g. breast tenderness or nausea) and :
• Has not had intercourse since her last menses; or
• Has been correctly and consistently using a reliable contraceptive method,
• Is within the first 7 days after the start of her menses (days 1-7); or

• Is within 3 weeks postpartum (for non-breastfeeding women); or


• Is within the first 7 days post-abortion; or
• Is fully breastfeeding, less than 6 months postpartum and has had no
menstrual bleeding
