Definition

 NGOs are non profit organization that


operates independently of any government,
whose purpose is to address a social or
political issue. E.g. Oxfam, Clean cloth
campaign, RENEW, Grameen Bank,etc
Mission
• Relief suffering
• Promote interest of poor
• Protect the environment Reduce Child Mortality
• Improve maternal health
• Increase education
• Combat Hiv/Aids & other diseases
• Rule of law, economic rights
• Women's rights, children's right
• Foster creativity
• Deliver emerging relief
Functions
 Development; deliberate efforts to secure
positive changes in peoples quality of life in
economic, political and social terms.

 Relief; As a immediate response natural or


man made disasters in terms of relatively
unproblematic challenges of distributing
resources to those in need in the form of
goods, services and technical assistance.
THEORIES OF NGOS
 As a third sector; Concerned about public
opinion, public interest and common good. It
is liberal.
 As a public sphere: According to Hannah
Adrendt, public sphere is like a civic center
where people chat openly, honestly,
hopefully with discipline about issues
affecting the community.

 Provide basis for liberal democratic politics
 Counter state power and provides key values
 Provides resources to citizen to organize in a
variety of networks such as health,edu,etc
which helps to abridge authoritarian regime.
 Create participatory culture in which
democracy transits to more political rights and
civil liberties.
