USES OF

SULPHURIC ACID
Sulphuric acid is formed through a natural process.
When sulphide mineral in the rock oxidizes, sulfuric
acid is formed. Sulfuric acid is strongly acidic.
Therefore it is used in cleaning of metals, removal
of impurities from oil, manufacturing of chemicals –
nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, synthesis of dye,
drugs, detergents explosives etc.
Sulphuric acid
There are 4 important uses of sulphuric acid in
various ways. For example :

* Sulphuric acid uses at home

* Sulphuric acid uses in industry
* Sulphuric acid uses drugs
* Sulphuric acid on skin
Sulfuric acid uses at home:
It is very dangerous chemical and should be handled
carefully. Because of such nature its uses at home are
very few.

EXAMPLES: (refer to the pictures below )

toilet bowl cleaners ,drain de-clogger , powdered
laundry detergents, pet-care products, rust-dissolving
solutions, metal cleaners, hand soaps, dish-washing
liquids and rain repellents used to prevent streaking on
automobiles as well as some products associated with
glass-making and other arts and crafts.

Sulfuric acid uses in industry:
It is used in different industries such as – wastewater
processing, production of cleaning agents, processing of
minerals, producing explosives, detergents and paper industry
for the manufacture of aluminium sulphate

EXAMPLE: (pictures are shown below )

*Fertilisers
*Gasoline
*Automobile batteries
*Paper bleaching
*Sugar bleaching
*Cellulose fibers
*Steel manufacturing
*Colouring agents

Sulfuric acid uses drugs:
Used to damage the cancerous cell DNA by the
manufacture of chemotherapy drugs. It is used
in ointments to treat various skin infections. It is
the basic ingredient of topical ointment named
Debacterol (picture below ) in the treatment of
canker sores

sore
Sulfuric acid on skin: (pictures after this slide )
It is used in skin ointments to treat skin
infections like canker sores. Concentrated
sulfuric acid is harmful for skin. It causes severe
skin burn and injury.
Other applications are – it is used in manufacture
of batteries, detergents like trisodium
phosphate, potato farming, printing ink, as a
dehydrating agent, making paper, perfume,
disinfectants, drugs etc.

INDUSTRIAL PROCESS IN
THE MANUFACTURE OF
SULPHURIC ACID (H2SO4)
Manufacture of sulphuric acid
• The process of manufacturing sulphuric acid is called the contact
process.
• Preparation of sulphuric acid by contact process is based upon the
catalytic oxidation of sulphur dioxide (SO2) to sulphur trioxide (SO3).
• The Raw materials used in the contact process are sulphur or
sulphide mineral ,air and water.
• The manufacture of sulphuric acid involves 3 stages
Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3
Comple contact process
•STAGE 1 = 》 To produce sulphur dioxide , SO2
😮 sulphur is burned in dry air to produce sulphur dioxide
chemical equation = S + O2 -> SO2
• STAGE 2 = 》 To prduce sulphur trioxide , SO3
😮 A mixture of sulphur dioxide gas and air is passed
over vanadium(V) oxide , V2O5 which is used as a
catalyst at a temperature of 450°C – 500°C and under a
pressure of 1 atm
chemical equation = 2SO2 + O2 = 2SO3
• STAGE 3 = 》 To produce sulphuric acid ,
H2SO4
😏 Sulphur Trioxide is dissolved in
concentrated sulphuric acid to produce oleum
, H2S2O7 .
chemical reaction = SO3 +H2SO4 -> H2S2O
😏 oleum is dissolved in water to produce
sulphuric Aacid
catalyst is usually a transition
metal which increases the rate ot
chemival equation = H2S2O7 +H2O ->
a reaction
2H2SO4
