THREE POINT STARTER

NECESSITY OF STARTER
 In DC motor the armature winding has very low
resistance ( it ranges between 0.1 to 0.5Ω).
 Due to this at the time of starting total line
current will flow through the armature winding
and winding will burn out.
 So to overcome this problem during starting three
point starter is used. These starter will limit the
line current at the time of starting.
CONSTRUCTION
 Construction wise a starter is a variable resistance, integrated
into number of sections.
 The contact points of these sections are called studs and are
shown separately as OFF, 1, 2,3,4,5, RUN.
 Other than that there are 3 main points, referred to as
• 'L' Line terminal. (Connected to positive of supply.)
• 'A' Armature terminal. (Connected to the armature winding.)
• 'F' Field terminal. (Connected to the field winding.)

 And from there it gets the name 3 point starter.

WORKING
 To start the motor, the main switch is closed and
the starting arm is moved to right.
 As soon as the arm moves in contact with the stud
no.1, the field circuit is directly connected to the
line and at the same time the starting resistance is
placed in series with the armature winding.
 As the arm is moved, the starting resistance is
gradually cut out. when the arm reachs to the ON
position the soft iron piece is attracted to the no-
volt coil. Then the motor will run normally.
 If the motor is over loaded beyond certain
predetermined value, the lever is lifted up and
short circuits the over load release. Hence the arm
is released and returns to OFF position.
 Thus the motor is disconnected from the supply,
and hence it is protected.
CONCLUSION
 Three point starter is not only used for the
starting purpose of the dc motor, apart from that it
can also protect the motor under overload
conditions.
