Jiada Nucci My Initial thoughts “I’d like to run for class president but I don't want to put my family through a background check”
● Political cartoon commenting on the extensive background checks
that presidential candidates and their families go through. ● Comparing class president to US president ● It's a joke, not only would a class president not be background checked, but their families certainly wouldn’t What is a background check? “A background check is a process a person or company uses to verify that a person is who they claim to be, and provides an opportunity for someone to check a person’s criminal record, education, employment history, and other activities that happened in the past in order to confirm their validity. “ Student background checks Students can't be background checked because “Crimes they committed as minors are sealed and cannot be discovered through a background check”. Teacher background checks Background checks are different for each state but some include:
● criminal history searches
● work history verifications ● professional license checks ● reference checks ● education verification checks ● regular drug testing Pros and cons to background checks Background checks are there to ensure that the students are safe and in the presence of a responsible adult. While faculty generally support background checks, some worry that if the checks are too extensive than petty crimes or crimes committed that have nothing to do with a students safety will risk their jobs or their ability to get hired. Questions I had ● How far do we want to take background checks? At what point do we consider a felony to be too severe for someone to teach? ● Do you think that background checks should differ state to state? sources ● https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Background_check ● https://www.edurisksolutions.org/blogs/?Id=2147483671 ● https://www.backgroundchecks.com/community/Post/6061/Which-Ba ckground-Checks-Are-Done-for-Teachers ● https://www.wect.com/2019/08/19/still-no-law-requiring-fingerprint- backgroud-checks-teachers-nc-public-schools/
