Introduction
 The Grand Canyon Skywalk, is a massive glass
walkway and a tourist attraction above the Colorado
River on the rim of the Grand Canyon West area in
the U.S. state of Arizona.
 It was funded by the Hualapai Indian tribe in
partnership with Chinese-American businessman
David Jin.
The Idea Of "Skywalk"
 David Jin was involved with the Hualapai
Nation for sometime, he had the idea of
extending a platform out over the edge of the
Grand Canyon and formally presented the
idea of the Skywalk to the tribe in 1996 and
funded the construction the project. The
original concept for the Skywalk design was a
rectangular platform extending straight out
over the rim of the canyon. That idea evolved
into “U” shaped walkway that has now been
constructed.
The Skywalk Glass Bridge
 The Skywalk has a horseshoe-shape, it is a
unique glass-bottomed cantilever structure
that spans 70 feet (21.34m) over the Grand
Canyon’s rim and sits 4000 feet (1219m)
above the Colorado River.
 The Skywalk allows visitors to walk out and
into the canyon, peering through the clear
glass floor down at the canyon or over the
glass walls into the valley beyond.
According to Hualapai officials, the cost of the
skywalk was 31 million dollars.
The construction started on March 2004, and
was completed on March of 2007.
The Skywalk Bridge was unveiled
March20,2007 and opened to the general
public on March27,2007.
Is The Skywalk Safe?
 The glass bridge was constructed with over
one million pounds of steel and is built to
withstand the weight of 71 fully-loaded
Boeing747 airplanes (over 71 million pounds).
The Skywalk was engineered to withstand
winds of over 100 miles per hour from 8
directions. Engineers also took earthquakes
into consideration, the structure was built to
last through an earthquake of up to 8.0 on
Richter scale.
 The skywalk passed the engineering
requirements and specifications by
400%.
 The floor was built from 4 inches thick and
clear glass, so visitors could think they are
walking on clouds.
 The bridge is secured with 2 inches thick and
clear glass wall stretching all the way from
both sides of the bridge.
 Visitors are instructed to shoe covers to
avoid scratches on glass and also prevent
them from slipping over on the glass floor.
Conclusion
 The Grand Canyon Skywalk is an
architectural marvel and it is the highest man-
made structure in the world.

 “My vision was to enable visitors to walk

the path of the eagle…”
Stated David Jin the
creator of the Grand Canyon Skywalk.
