EVALUATION OF GONADOSOMATIC INDEX

AND FECUNDITY OF INDIAN MAJOR CARP

CIRRHINUS MRIGALA

Name of Student:
Muhammad Bilal Shafique
M.Phil. Zoology

Supervisor:
Dr. Muhammad Sultan Haider
University of Lahore.
Introduction
What is Fecundity

• Fecundity denotes the egg laying capacity of a fish.

Fecundity estimate is an important parameter, as

1. It is useful to estimate egg production.
2. It is useful in commercial management of fishery.
3. It is useful to understand the reproductive biology of
fish.
Introduction
Gonadosomatic index

• The percentage weight of ovary to the body

weight is called Gonadosomatic index.

GSI gives detail ideas about the

1.It is useful estimate reproductive potential of fish.
2.It is useful for check overall health and
physiological rate of fish.
3.It give idea about status of species.
Introduction
Importance of Mrigal

•Cirrhinus mrigala is a bottom feeder.

•It grow in rivers, lakes and ponds.
•It feeds on Zooplankton, Phytoplankton debris and
decaying organic matter.
•Its body color is slivery, dark-grey.
•Sexual maturity is attained in 1-2 years.
•Among the three Indian major carps, Cirrhinus mrigala
normally grows more slowly than Catla and Rohu.
Introduction
Importance of Mrigal

Why I Select Cirrhinus mrigala

Cirrhinus mrigala is used as food source, as its flesh

is tasty and easily digestible.
It has high growth rate.
It can survive even in poor quality of water.
 It show more resistant to diseases.
Mrigal is a highly fecund fish.
 Fecundity increases with age, and normally
ranges from 100 000-150 000 eggs/kg.
Why I Select Cirrhinus mrigala

• It has high nutritive value.

• It is found throughout Pakistan.
• It has strong demand in Pakistan.
Carp Culture Species Harvesting
ratio in Pakistan

• Rohu (Labeo rohita) 30-35%

• Mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) 15-20%
• Catla (Catla catla) 10-20%
• Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) 15-20%

• Silver carp (Hypophthalmicthys molitrix) 15-20%

Scientific Classification

• Kingdom Animalia
• Phylum Chordata
• Class Actinopterygyii
• Order Cypriniformes
• Family Cyprinidae
• Genus Cirrhinus
• Species C. mrigala
Aims and Objectives

1.To check the Fecundity Cirrhinus mrigala.

2.To check the GSI of Cirrhinus mrigala.

3.To find the relationship between fecundity and

GSI with body parameters.
Materials and Methods

Sample Site
Specimens of Mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala) will be
collected from commercial fish farms at Gakhra Kalan.

Sample Collection
Samples of Cirrhinus mrigala (1-2 Kg) will be
collected for experiment two times in a month.
Physic-Chemical Parameters

• Following Physic-Chemical Parameters of water

will be measure at time of every sampling.

• Temperature (by thermo meter)

• pH (by portable meter/pH paper)
• Total Alkinity (acid base titration)
• Dissolved Oxygen (by portable meter)
• Total Dissolved Solids (by portable meter)
Body Parameters

• Following Morphological Parameters will be

measure at time of sampling

• Body Length (Centimeter Scale)

• Standard length (Centimeter Scale)
• Depth length (Centimeter Scale)
• Body Weight (Electronic Balance)
Dissection of Fish
• An incision will made on ventral side of the
abdomen from posterior to interior most tip of
the fish with a sharp scalpel and a bone cutter.
• Ovaries will found attach on the lower side of
the swim bladder in the abdominal cavity.
• Ovaries will separate carefully from the swim bladder and
other tissues.
• Moisture of ovaries will remove with the help of blotting
paper (Kapil et al., 2011).

How To Find GSI

• Now weight the Gonads through digital balance, and

• Calculate Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) by following formula
(Singh and Srivastava, 1991).

Weight of gonad (g)

• GSI = …................................................................. × 100
Weight of fish (g) – Gonad weight (g)
How To Find Relative Fecundity

• Small piece of ovary will take separately from

anterior and posterior portions.
• The number of eggs for each portion will be
count .
• The mean number of eggs in small portion was
determined then multiplied by the total weight
of the ovary.
• Which gave the total number of eggs.
How To Find Absolute Fecundity

nG
F = ...................
g

Where
• F =Fecundity
• n = Number of eggs in sub-sample
• G = Weight of ovaries
• g = Weight of the sub-samples
(Lone and Hussain, 2009)
Statistical analysis
The data in this experiment will be analyzed by using analysis of
variance procedure (ANOVA).

One-way ANOVA
was followed
by Tukey test.
