(Isolation) Final project

pitch:
By Gabriella Eccleston
Overview
• My idea is a long take of a dystopian short, I want to have a few short cuts put together at the
beginning which will help the audience to understand the dystopian world and then it will go into
my long take. I have not yet got the script down of the long take but I know I want it to flow
through a house showing everyone’s perspective of being in isolation. By not using any cuts and
having the camera flow through the house it gives a sense of claustrophobia as the audience can
see the family are all in one house.
• I want the audience to feel frustrated for my characters and connect on an emotional level, my
target audience is going to be very vast from teenagers to adults. The reason I have not got a
certain age is because I feel all ages are effected in different ways and I want to show a few
different ways people are effected. I believe that this will help the audience to connect with my
characters.
Location and Characters
• The location is going to be my house, I was going to use a house anyway
because my theme is isolation so it is still easy to complete in quarantine.
• My characters are easy as I want to use a family so I can use my own family.
I did however want to have two siblings but because I only have a brother and
we are all in isolation ourselves I have not been able to get someone to play
the second kid.
• Mum and Dad which are both working at home.
• Son
Themes
• The themes I will be exploring is, Isolation, Dystopia (which I have
explored before) and Long takes / continuous shots.
• I have explored dystopia before quite deeply and I have also done a lot of
research into continuous shots.
• I have done some primary research into isolation by asking people how
they have been dealing with it and I will ask again in another week to back
up my research and see how their views have changed.
Why?
• I am making my short film to show how different people deal with isolation, I
believe it is current at the moment because we are all in lockdown and everyone
deals in a different way. Some people may be finding it hard to deal so to see
how others could be dealing could help or give ideas how they can find it easier
to deal at the moment.
• I want my film to vary from having a good time with family to everyone getting
frustrated and everyone feeling in a very small space and claustrophobic.
• I believe a unique selling point
Who
• I believe my film would interest all ages, from teenagers to adults. My film is all about
dealing with isolation and all ages are going through this and dealing in different ways.
This may affect teenagers as they can’t go out but also adults as they are losing their jobs
over having to be isolated. I want to be able to show all sides of dealing with isolation
and I want to add concepts that relate to everyone.
• Many people at the moment are losing their jobs, as a result of this the government are
paying companies up to 2,500 a month so they can pay workers 80% of their wages, this
is called Furlough. Being in isolation means people aren’t getting paid as much and
companies need to shut down, people deal with this in different ways therefore adults
would still be interested in my film and seeing how different people cope with this.
Detail
• I want my film to start off with a few short shots of News Reports like the
beginning of WWZ, this is to help the audience know they are in a Dystopian
world from the beginning. I am then going to transition into my first continuous
take, this is going to consist of a family isolated in their house and it will portray
the first few days where the family are getting along and paying games together.
• Then it will be as the weeks have progressed and it will go through the house
from character to character to show how they are each dealing with the isolation.
I believe this will establish an emotional connection between the audience and
my characters.
