HOW IS RADIATION

DOSIMETRY RELATED
TO HUMAN HEALTH?
GROUP 4 AND 5
In studying the effect of radiation on the
body, neither the energy of the radiation (in
kcal/mol) not its intensity (in ci) alone or in
combination is of a particular importance.
RADIATION DOSIMETRY

• Is the measurement, calculation and assessment of the inonizing

radiation dose absorbed by the human body.
3 DIFFERENT UNITS USED TO DESCRIBE
THE EFFECTS OF RADIATION IN THE BODY

•Roentgens
•Rads
•Rems
ROENTGENS (R)
•
• It measure the energy delivered by a radiation source.
• It is the measure of exposure to a particular form of
radiation.
• One roentgen is the amount of radiation the produces
ions having coulomb per kilogram
RADS

• Stands for Radiation Absorbed Dose

• It is a measure of the radiation absorbed from a
radiation source.
• SI unit is Gy; where 1 Gy = 100 rad
REMS

• Stands for Roentgen Equivalent for Man

• It is a measure of the effect of the radiation when a
person absorbs 1 roentgen.
• SI unit is Sievert; where 1 Sv = 100 rem
