CROUP IN

CHILDREN

DEFINITION:-
CROUP is a common primarily pediatric viral
respiratory tract illlness.
Its alternative names , laryngotracheitis and
laryngotracheobronchitis.
It is a syndrome characterized by “barking cough”,
inspiratory stridor , hoarseness and signs of respiratory
distress which occur due to varying degree of laryngeal
obstruction.
INCIDENCE:-
It is more common in-
Males than females
Winter than in summer
Usually in infants and toddlers
ETIOLOGY:-
Viruses causing acute infectious croup such as-
Para influenza virus
Influenza virus
Measles
Adenovirus
Enterovirus
Allergies
Reflux from stomach
Croup spread through either:-
Direct inhalation from a cough and/or sneeze
By contamination of hands from contact with fomities
MANAGEMENT:-
Monitor & facilitate respiration
Administration of prescribed medication
Maintain hydration & nutritional requirement
Promote rest
Support & educate the parents
